Plate tectonics, the process that shapes Earth’s surface, was surprisingly speedy in the past, a new study reveals. The study measured the speed of plate movements over the last two billion years and found that they were much faster than today, reaching up to 20 centimeters per year. Plate tectonics may have started earlier than previously thought, and that it may have influenced the evolution of life and climate.

Mercury isotopes show vascular plants had colonized land extensively by the early Silurian [15 million years before oldest confirmed fossil]:

Inferred because terrestrial signature starts appearing in marine sediments, suggesting greatly enhanced weathering of the continents as a result of land plants taking over.

Chemical reactions on the early Earth - between a magma ocean and a hydrogen atmosphere! - may have formed its ocean.

(The production of water during Earths formation is of course different from the retention of water, but an intriguing theory nonetheless that may help to explain very watery .)

QOTD: ‘we rocks get around more than you think.’

You will get much further in understanding - and - once you grasp this.

Frozen in time since the dinosaurs’ age
A story to tell in a single page
Written in stone formed from sandy shore
Of a Cretaceous Sea that is no more
Their impression, their orientation, providing clues
Of ancient environments, long passed views
Uplift and movement have delivered them here
To a place and time where we are near
A story of life, of death, and final rest
Written in stone to stand time’s test

I often wonder what early humans experienced when traveling the Pacific NW coast in the glacial age. Wide swaths of sand, coastline a mile or more westward and 100 meters lower. To be the first footsteps upon newly swept shores. Power and serenity in abundance.

We can still witness that at times.
