🎧 Spring semester 1977 @ #EastCarolina, I was working @ #WECU, the campus station and heard/played/loved advance copies of LPs.
Once I could buy "Book of Dreams" I did. School Kids Records had the best price.
Took it back to my room, stuffed a towel under the door, opened the windows, bonged some probably Paraquant-tainted weed, strapped my headphones on and lay down on my bed.
"My Own Space" was/is my favorite song on that album.
🎧 In May 1980, my "f_ _ _ _ t!" life was threatened by 3 frat boys at #EastCarolina. "Boy, if we see you again, we'll kill you!"
I took them at their word since one had me around the throat, off the ground and against a wall.
I dropped everything—Uni classes, middays and music director at a radio station, and head DJ gig for a couple discos.
In DC, I interned @ #DNC and had a hotel job at night. Skinny times, but happy.
"I'm Coming Out" was my #anthem that Fall. https://youtu.be/-xMvP6PsD9A
🎧 "Saturday Night Fever, The Bee Gees & Me" | Fall 1977: I was a sophomore @ #EastCarolina and a radio and club DJ. The double-album dropped a month before the movie and I was playing it before that. I don't remember which song was first; I do remember several being in rotation at the same time.

⤴️ 🎧 #Queer in HS #music memories, Part II.
After "Fallin' in Love" YT cued up "So Into You" from Atlanta Rhythm Section—also on the radio that winter of 76/77 and another "Our Song."
Next, the YT served "Moonlight (Feels Right) by Starbuck; that was a hit the summer between HS and college. Frank and I roomed together at #EastCarolina that Fall, free from his GF's prying eyes (she was at UNC-Chapel Hill). We lasted one semester, no longer. Frank went back "home." #70s

📷 I ran as far away as fast as I could from the South I was born and reared in. First to DC in 1980 when my fa**ot life was threatened by frat boys at #EastCarolina in Greenville NC; later from that the closeted-because-AIDS hellhole to SF in 1990. Life, my authentic-self life began then.
In 2000, I was banished from the City because Internet money made #SanFrancisco too expensive.
Made this self-portrait in 2000, a few days after I'd moved back in with the parentals. AngryAF, I was.
Found a job/housing deal in SF in 2004 and moved back for a few year. Didn't like it much.
Can't go "home" again.
🎧 Forty-five years ago this morning at 12:44, Tuesday, February 21, 1978, I was on the air (DJ) at #WRQR, the #QuadFM "play what-you-want" rock station in Farmville, NC. A sophomore at #EastCarolina, less and less interested in a degree and fascinated by the creative opportunities I had and imagined possible (they were). No rules, no scripts. My single sponsor was #JOB #rollingpapers. The studio was the living room of old house in the the country, dark except for a fabric-covered lamp on top of the control board. I spun #Hypnotized to open every night.

🎧 #DCDiary | In May 1981, I'd saved enough to rent a *tiny efficiency @ 16th/P after couch surfing in Tysons for year (thank you, Sophia). I lost almost everything running for my life "We'll kill you f***ot" frat boys @ #EastCarolina. Saved my amp, speakers and turntable. Bought #U2's BOY and EAST SIDE STORY by #Squeeze. Couldn't not afford music. That's where "Tempted" takes me. ❤️ https://youtu.be/vZic9ZHU_40

For those of you paying attention to #collegefootball during this #bowlseason, I think there are still 7 minutes to go in yesterday's Birmingham Bowl between #eastcarolina and #coastalcarolina.
