On vacation (back home) in #EastFrisia
Only a few days left …. and I’m going full Hobbit-Mode 🚣♀️ Rowing a boat across the beautiful Loppersumer Meer, good company, a can of beer…

The #medieval church of #Petkum (now an outskirt of Emden) holds quiet a collection of medieval and early modern tomb slabs. Here, I post two examples from the late 15th: One of them shows a pretty cool depiction of a guy in a gothic plate armor with (german) sallet and greatsword

Visited the church of #Petkum (13th century, but with many later additions which contribute to the interesting piecemeal appearance of the building) at the eastern banks of the river Ems. Within the church, a beautiful 13th century baptistery can be found.

Took the small ferry from #Petkum to #Ditzum, one of my father‘s (🖤) favorite spots.
Visited Ditzum‘s #medieval (13th century) church with its light house-shaped bell tower (mid 19th century).
Mental note: One day, I will run an #alasfortheawfulsea Sea adventure set in East Frisia during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. I have absorbed so much folklore and local history …. It has to be done 😅 #pbta

On vacation (back home) in #EastFrisia. Went by bike through #Emden were I went to school. Emden, you gray Bunker City by the sea, you ARE a beauty (on third or fourth sight).
The townscape is still marked by the hulking silhouettes of WW2 bunkers. They withstood the air raids which pounded Emden into bits and pieces and turned out to be too massive to be removed after the war. Some are like weathered rocks jutting from the surroundings, some have been repurposed, „hide“ behind new faces… 1/x

On vacation. Road-tripping to #EastFrisia (where I‘m from and will always feel at home).
Stayed overnight in the beautiful #Münsterland region and visited the moated castles of #Lüdinghausen. Below: Castle Vischering (built structures date to the 16th and 17th century) and an early modern wall section with an incised sun dial #CastleContent

On vacation back home in #EastFrisia. Visited the old cemetery (Karkhof) of the Ludgeri church (built 13th to 15th c CE) in the small city of #Norden. The cemetery features many old trees and weathered tombstones. #OldCemetaries

Last day of my short Easter vacation back home in #EastFrisia. Homemade apple pie and tea with friends and family
Long weekend back home in #EastFrisia / #Ostfriesland. Walked by the Harderwykenburg in Leer, one of the few remaining tower castles from the period of the warring East Frisian chieftains. The brick tower was built under Hayo Unken II Ripperda in the 15th century and known back then as the Unkenburg. In early modern times, the castle was converted into a mansion and the defensive moat was backfilled. #CastleContent

Short vaccations back home in #EastFrisia, where I grew up. Visited one of my most favorite spots, the „Knock“, a seaside promenade outside the city of #Emden. Here, the river Ems flows into the North Sea. A place marked by contrasts. The beautiful wadden sea on the one, industrial plants on the other side. As Teenagers we hung out here a lot at night, drinking beer, listening to the #SistersOfMercy and industrial music, watching the huge humming cargo ships passing by, vanishing in the dark

Willkommen im Norddeutschen Herbst! Kühl ist es so langsam geworden, Nebel können wir auch schon. Bald fehlt dann die Sonne und wir haben nur noch Nebel und Regen. #Fotomontag #nordish #nordishbynature #moin #moindenganzentag #eastfrisia #niedersachsen
