Trim Greenhood - Pterostylis concinna - Croajingolong NP, VIC. Another widespread winter-flowering orchid in East Gippsland which seems to be out in smaller numbers this year with limited winter rainfall. Can be found as early as May, then right through to Sept, in different areas. Several large colonies that I've seen flowering in mid-June were not out this year - with just a few scattered roadside plants located so far this winter.

Fringed helmet orchid - Corybas fimbriatus - in Croajingolong NP, VIC. Fairly widespread winter-flowering orchid in east AUS - can be found growing in large colonies in good seasons. Have only seen a few scattered plants out so far this year in drier conditions.

First quick Far East Gippsland winter orchid scout of the year only came up with a single nodding greenhood (Pterostylis nutans) in flower. No plants at all out at several sites which normally feature large colonies of greenhoods/helmets in July.

Local winter rainfall is so far down a fair bit compared to recent good post-fire seasons so could already be an issue heading into a potentially hot/dry spring and summer. Hopefully some better late-winter rainfall will pick things up but not seeing much on the forecast at the moment!

Eriochilus cucullatus - Eastern Bunny Orchid (Parson's Bands) near Genoa, VIC. I usually call this as an autumn orchid but it can seen flowering in VIC between January and June - depending on location / altitude. Mostly small, single flowers out at this location - apart from these two ;)

First butterfly photo of the day - a slight reprise ... Eastern Iris-skipper (Mesodina halyzia) on heath milkwort (Comesperma ericinum) in open heathland near Genoa, VIC. Lots of these medium sized skippers out and about in the summer sun at this location.

Cryptostylis subulata (large tongue orchids) plus pollinators near Genoa, VIC. These summer-flowering orchids mimic the appearance and odour of a female Lissopimpla excelsa wasp (orchid dupe or red flower wasp) which tricks male wasps into 'mating' with the flower - leading to pollination.

Most flowering has now finished at this location but some plants still had a single open flower to attract the wasps. The relative lack of flowers to wasps might have contributed to 2 x males attracted to the same flower in the top photo.

Mind you, I have also rather unkindly thought that the journalist who wrote that apocryphal Ava Gardner quote “On the Beach is a story about the end of the world, and Melbourne sure is the right place to film it” had quite clearly never been to Lakes Entrance.

Roadside Horned Orchids (Orthoceras strictum) near Mallacoota, VIC. This is one of only two species in the genus and is found in all eastern AUS states + New Caledonia. The other species from NZ is also sometimes included in O. strictum as a single, variable species growing across three countries.

Large tongue orchids - Cryptostylis subulata - in the rain on my last East Gippsland trip for the year. Was hoping to see one of the other three summer-flowering Tongue Orchids that grow around the same location but may have been just a little early. So might have to scrub that bit about 'last East Gippsland trip for the year' ... ;)

Austral Leek Orchid (Prasophyllum australe) on the last summer orchid scout for the year at Genoa, VIC. This species can be prolific following bush fires but only 2 scattered plants at this site on the edge of swampland almost 3 yrs on from the 2020 fires.

Thelymitra improcera - Heathland Sun Orchid - near Genoa, VIC. Rare in East Gippsland (also rare in NSW/TAS) plus generally shy to flower unless weather is warm + sunny - so was pretty happy to find one out on a coolish / windy day. Could only find the one plant - and it closed as a few clouds came over in the early afternoon.
