"Norfolk Southern raised its estimate on costs associated with the #EastPalestine, Ohio, train derailment to $803 million, a move that sent its profit sharply lower in the second quarter.

"The updated cost forecast Thursday was more than double the estimate that the Atlanta-based railroad operator provided earlier this year.

"Executives said that the bulk of the costs are from the #environmental clean-up, and added that there may be additional legal costs, fines and penalties in the coming quarters. These are difficult to estimate, they said."

The #EastPalestine crash that this legislation is in reaction to has a bunch of causes, and I'm not sure that nationalization — or the inverted case of privatization in a nationalized system — would fix any of them:

- bad safety culture
- sparse hotbox detectors
- poor car maintenance
- outdated braking practices
- poor communication between rail operator and first responders

The #EastPalestine train had a crew of two, plus a trainee.
