I remember first hearing the story of A Christmas Carol as a child and thinking that world, and that Ebenezer Scrooge character, sounded so awful. Being so glad this popular tale had made everyone see how wrong such selfishness and greed was and how much we ought to help others rather than leave them to suffer. But I hear it now, in 2022, and I just see contemporary British society and contemporary British attitudes reflected in most of the pages until the end. Instead of the social justice Dickens imagined, we got a country full of Scrooges.
