I am out of my home waters, and the mallards here are absolutely bonkers. Heavily hybridized with different domestic types, certainly, but perhaps with other wild #duck species as well? (The white eye-ring on the one dabbling in the shallows makes me ponder.) Having to be vague about them in my #ebird counts gives me hives, but how long can I search for better certainties before giving up?

Mallard hybrids are the terror that flaps in the night.

Nine days ago I saw a bird rare for its area. #eBird has not yet accepted it. This shouldn't bug me, but I wanted more people to see it.

I drove 2 hours to the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge. I spent 3 hours there and didn't see a single bird I have already seen in my home county. 😐

But a day hiking around on a BEAUTIFUL early spring day is always a boon to the spirit..

Feel free to congratulate me for my good fortune--this is my first-ever sighting of a Blue-winged Teal. Note the pale blue feathers on the forewing.
