678 followers · 8431 posts · Server octodon.socialA bit of the surprise. GoodNotes is a big iOS note taking and PDF markup app, #12 in App Store for productivity, "Editor's Choice" etc., well, turns out they have flashcards and are using #Ebisu, my little flashcard scheduling library.
Wow, but also, turns out people have been complaining that it's scheduling their reviews too soon, so this Redditor https://www.reddit.com/r/GoodNotes/comments/13124z6/study_sets_the_reason_why_cards_repeat_a_lot/ asked the developers and learned they're using Ebisu and was kind enough to poke around my repo and wrote up a nice status update about my attempts to fix this flaw.

I'm using importance sampling. Works great.
I decide to use a mixture model for the proposal distribution—have strong theoretical reasons to expect this to reduce variance. But no. Estimator goes nuts, absolute trash outputs.
Whyyyy? Check every piece of it, then every piece's sub-pieces, nothing out of the ordinary. So then you start checking the things that shouldn't matter.
I was generating samples from the mixture as samples = [generate1(), generate2()], because the estimator doesn't care what order the samples are in.
I shuffle samples.
Estimator converges.
WTAF?
Stepping back a sec, I actually have a bivariate distribution, so I'm actually generating samplesX = [generate1X(), generate2X()] and similarly samplesY. So the first chunk of both sample vectors is from mixture component 1 and the last chunk of both from 2 (with a little difference somewhere in the middle, depending on the mixture weight).
The two mixtures are different, but it looks like that bivariate interaction between the two variables' mixtures not being—sigh—mixed caused an ugly bias. It's not an issue in the univariate case, which is why I was like "there is no way shuffling matters here", until alas it did.
Trying to draw meaningful lessons from this, other than the narrow lesson that "carefully avoid lining things up too regularly in mixture components".
A bad global lesson is, "always shuffle your Monte Carlo samples form mixtures" but I'm pretty sure that's not necessary in the univariate case, and I'm always leery of doing extra work (like shuffling) when it's not necessary.
This is hopefully the last piece in the new version of #Ebisu. 🤞

Ich habe mich schon immer gewundert warum mir in#Japan nur das Ebisu Bier schmeckt. Nach einem Bittet Museum Besuch ist es mir klar geworden. Das Bier hat ursprünglich ein deutscher in Japan hergestellt. Er hat dabei den Hopfen extra aus Deutschland nach Japan eingeführt. Und das war 1890 !!!
