>Its like how inexpensive-to-manufacture EV are being priced higher than gas powered vehicles
And still the IPCC tells us we have to move away from #ecars and people plug their ears and lalalala like they have with emissions advise from the IPCC for 30 years ?
>but also makes clear that simply replacing gasoline with batteries won't be enough: cities must also dramatically curtail the use of automobiles and avoid "locking in" future emissions with more car-dependent infrastructure.

Never mind the GWs of coal fired power plants being built to build then out for is... It's like emsisiona aren't even a concern with emsisions reductions, as long as it's some new cool tech it must be ok?

>So many negative media stories about electric vehicles written by people who never owned an electric vehicle.
I don't need to jump off the cliff to know that jumping off a cliff is a bad idea, I just have to read the opinion of experts on gravity and then use my imagination. Similaey with #ecars for example, the IPCC

We should not be doing #ecars at all, we already know they are just green washing bullshit.

We've run out if time for enteratining change based on entitlement and not on what's necessary.

@sortius
I have posted in numerous threads from people posting about how this might change peoples behavior and I pointed out that it did no such thing in Australia.
We now have draconian laws in every state to lock up climate protestors, SAs being the most recent, and we have people voting en masse for impactory climate deniers who continue doubling down on the stupidity of human entitlment vs the laws of nature.
A few examples; the airlines have never been so busy in thier lives...when we should be closing airports. The stupidity that is #ecars when we have to transition away from
cars (novated leases, ecar bonuses etc. More coal mines, more gas extraction (Beetaloo Basin, Scarborough etc )
Using us as an example, I think many will be astounded to see the response being ...to make it worse.
@basyl
To be fair people have it just never gains traction eg Professor Kevin Anderson has pointed this out since I first heard a lecture of his in 2012.
No ones telling entitled developed world folk they can't drive #ecars and fly all over the world nor cool/heat the entire paper thin McMansion with ducted HVAC/nor the verybrich fly thier private jets and fill their personal yachs with $1/4 mil of diesel.
It's often pointed out we could have a 32% emissions cut in about 2 weeks if we got rich people to live like the average European. Not enough but it gives us some breathing space.
The chart below courtesy of @rahmstorf for example.
>in other words, we can't consume our way out of this mess.
The continual defense in here of #ecars shows the depth of the issue, even the people who know climate change as an issue have no real interest in actually solving it.
One just has to look at recent elections for evidence of that :( The new NSW climate minster today in the AFR saying we need to use gas for a long time to come. Why Australian voters concerned about #ClimateChange are voting Labor or Teal (LNP lite) is a modern mystery of hypocrisy I guess.
That aside, back on to your excellent point on energy, for those looking for more excellent info on energy, Tom Murphy (Physicist) has made his excellent text book available free of charge to everyone
https://escholarship.org/uc/energy_ambitions
His long running blog is here and is mostly concerned with energy
@andrew
And as always totally ignores the externalities, some of which are: resource depletion, extra energy generation needed to move 2t of car around, urban sprawl and the resultant destruction of the biosphere (some 30% of a cities space is for cars that could be given over to people and housing), the resultant CO2 emissions from building more roads, particulate pollution from brakes, tyres and road damage which is more then from the exhaust, VOCs and on and on.
Can we stop defending the stupidity that is cars and at least pretend we need to actually start doing what's necessary? Billions of #ecars are the problem and are a solution only for the car industry.

@jbe
Currently with solar recycling it runs about 15-17% of the materials are extracted for recycling AFAIK.
I also have no idea how useful that end product is in down steam use though ? Is it down cycled and used in nonsense products and trickets ?
I am sure it can be improved, maybe even a 50% improvements will see it get closer to 30% but as solar grows extraordinarily, that's not even close to enough. As we've seen with the complete debacle with plastic recycling it can lead to all sorts of disastrous consequences, in order to preserve the orthodoxy now, it seems we are.prepares to sacrifice the biospheres future.
This is in no way a defence of the fossil fuel orthodoxy but we need much LESS energy use, no 2t #ecars but cycling for example, rather then a high energy society and allow the developed world's energy needs to grow (equality).
>There is some hope in this climate crisis - but we must accelerate the positive
There is much danger in this line of thinking becase mostly we havent accepted what "the positive" is. The weathy are the problem and there has been zero effort to ameriolate their massive emisisons be it a concerned climate scientists flying to yet another conference, or an oligagarch taking time out to recuperate on their yacht with a SCOTUS judge, emisisons are the problem. This years May CO2 ppm is 3 above last years for this reason..
Even the best of us in here have substituted entitlement for positivity and are engaging in activies that are just a continuation of the orgy of destruction that's led us here.
eg #ecars being the classic example and the wealthy using money to adapt but that adaption just increasing emisisons and destruction falling on the poor.
Not to shit on anyones positivety parade but we have barley even admitted what needs to be done yet, let alone engaged in doing it, it's why emissions keep increasing.
@Lats
Alas were out of time for anything but radical solutions, if we don't, we collapse civilisation. I have no idea why that's the prefered choice.
I'd rather collapse the economy but voters aren't interested. The keep electing deniers with delusional tales of fantasy (ALP, Libs, Nats) Even The #Greens aren't radical enough but their rise would have seen more serious discussion likely ensue but that was a solution for 20 or 30years ago.
Alas, voters everywhere have chosen to destroy the biosphere and hide behind tecno-hopium babble and denial to justify it. One just has to look at the stupidity of #ecars and airport expansions as examples of this destruction and denial. And what's proposed ?, remove fossil fuel sponsorship from sport...while driving ans flying them around of course..

Car pollution kills more Australians than crashes, new research finds
>The study found emissions from vehicles caused 11,105 premature adult deaths every year, and hospitalised 12,210 people with cardiovascular issues and 6,840 people with respiratory problems.
------------------------------------------------
While they mention ecars helping I am not sure why ? Other studies have found 75% of pollutants from vehicle are from brakes, tyres and road particles (asphalt and paint from the traffic), and only 25% from the exhaust. Heavier and more ecars (as we have grow our population) will make tyre and road pollution even worse, see here for a article on that
https://mastodon.au/@largess/109911613548380448
Cars are obviously the problem, electrifying them helps the car industry but does not make for better societies. Forcing everyone to buy a $60K ecars the hastens our decline seems a particularity poor decision.
Motornomativity seems even more strong then capitalisms support or support for climate change theatre and inaction.
#climatechange #pollution #fuckcars #ecars
Health impact of tyre particles causing ‘increasing concern’, say scientists
>The warning follows UK government data that shows significantly more tiny pollution particles now come from tyre erosion than are emitted from vehicle exhausts.
>The report estimates 52% of all the small particle pollution from road transport came from tyre and brake wear in 2021, plus a further 24% from abrasion of roads and their paint markings.
>Just 15% of the emissions came from the exhausts of cars and a further 10% from the exhausts of vans and HGVs.
--------------------------------------------------
While regenerative braking from EVs may help at the margin, their heavier nature means more wear on tyres an more pollution again.
There is no escaping the toxicity if what we continue to do the same thing in the FACE OF ALL THE EVIDENCE. You know, same thing climate deniers do, with fossil fuels is the same horror some advocates for climate change do defending #ECars
Same with biodiversity loss and urban sprawl from cars, from urban heat island effect from a lack of trees and shrubs in urban areas so much concrete and asphalt, from the massive waste of resources from asphalt and concrete. from resource depletion from the tonnes of material each vehicle needs, from the scalability issue of billions of cars, from incredible death rates for animals from cars
What do ? Ride a bike and Vote Green (for better alternate infrastructure)
All too much, then the continued destruction is assured which
Cars ARE the problem.
