The original Habitat devs created a new company to explore the future of virtual worlds and in 1997/8 began beta testing their latest creation, EC Habitats (EC standing for the name of the company which was Electric Communities).

EC Habitats was the first secure distributed virtual world. Everything was P2P and so you can still use it today without needing a live world server.

It never made it out of beta, but it was truly ahead of its time.
