Vet nurse program at Box Hill includes a core course on self-care which includes an assessment to create a self-care plan. Sometimes the content is difficult and upsetting and students need to establish healthy strategies to manage.

If healing is the first priority, the focus becomes on slow and self-paced sustainble build up of skills and capacity. Benefits all students - useful revision material, supportive environment.

Re-establishing belonging when students can return to the classroom, so they can work in their own time and not feel behind (which increases anxiety). Creating safety in the classroom by making it normal to take time off and return.

Lots of great, practical strategies for : Creating self-paced alternatives of key content for students to watch in their own time will help students who need to take a mental health break from the classroom. Checking in using polls to see how students are doing. Ensuring students know they can (and should!) take breaks. Providing digestible content and lots of opportunities for success.

Mandatory attendance policies had a significant negative effect on student mental health. If you are experiencing trauma, you can't participate or engage in learning.

Forcing attendance on mentally unwell students doesn't help them learn - it impacts other students, teaching staff, and learning outcomes. In Vet Nursing course, it can also directly impact animal welfare.

Ben Varkalis from Otago: Attendance does not mean students are engaged! Covid forced a change in thinking and now they welcome students to enter the classroom from different doors (asynch, synch, flexible).
