As part of our celebrations we are interviewing some of the journal Editors and in the current issue, Almut Kelber tells us about the incredible sensory worlds inhabited by other animals and how she would love to communicate with them like Dr Dolittle

Espostoa frutescens cacti surround their flowers with hairs which act like mufflers, absorbing the echolocation clicks produced by bats, to make the echoes from their flowers stand out so that the nectar feeding mammals distribute their pollen far and wide

Oh, man, I’m excited about getting a new bat detector in a few days. Have to remind myself that it’s still hibernation and migration season, but within a few months, I’ll go camping in the desert and do some prime listening. I may hang out in my yard and porch before then and see if I might catch some calls.

Can anyone recommend a bat detector (for picking up bat ultrasonic calls) that is not a kit and is $100 or less? Heterodynne ok. Phone apps ok. Thanks.

Last december I discovered a great method that can detect shifts in the direction of associated to
phenotypic traits.

I like to think of it is as a . If you give a trait, for instance , you can see which site in which protein coevolved with this trait. Afterwords, you can also verify that genes for which you find a actually makes sense regarding the trait. (1/N)

I have a bat flight in the garden where I test fly my rescue bats to ensure they are strong enough to support themselves when released. They need to be able to manouvre quickly and feed on the wing. As the sun was going down I suddenly realised this guy was watching my 🦇🦇 in the bat flight. We had an audience. A sneaky Tawny🦉

October: Iggy, a rare Barbastelle bat, was seen flying the corridors of a hospital for days. He was finally caught and rescued and was extremely underweight for the time of year. Bats need to gain weight in order to see them through the cold winter months. Iggy soon settled in and was a treasure to care for. Here he is, enjoying his dinner.

Meet a cold and tired Sydney, named by the finder. I rescued her last night. She was found yesterday a.m by a chap that had been replacing the finder's outside alarm. I initially gave her rejuvenating fluids and she now needs to build up fat, gain weight in order to see her through the winter months. If the outside temp. stays the same though, she may be with me for a while. species

Bats, much like Death Metal singers, use 'false vocal folds' to create low frequency vocalizations.

edition.cnn.com/2022/11/29/wor

I guess that's why:
(1) Batman growls all the time; and
(2) bats love Chuck Schuldiner.
