I’ve long argued that, in order to tackle the , we need radical political, economic and cultural . And I’ve always been told that we don’t have time for that.

This week, we’ve seen the real-time impacts of the environment movement’s refusal to think outside the box of existing political power. And the Greens’ failure (thus far) to build the social movements necessary to support our parliamentary negotiations. And, most starkly, the complete corruption of our mainstream politics - the fact that Labor and the press gallery act as mouthpieces for the fossil fuel industry and believe political manoeuvring is more important than stopping omnicide.

I thought this would be a good time to re-share this essay I wrote a couple of years ago, explaining my in this moment of .

I imagine a future society to be one centered around agrarian workshop communes connected by local rail networks with a self-governing population of 100-150 people. My rationale being that large-scale industry, while efficient, does not result in human work satisfaction or attention to detail. By more local production of food and goods, the needs of the community can be tailored by that community and their neighbors.

Its weird when people build spirituality around mushrooms being magical, or to the contrary, when they have fears about them being poisonous. They are living things, not magical, but integral parts of a functioning ecosystem, not dissimilar to the plants they usually form some sort of relationship with. Oddly people don't ascribe this magic to the plants that are just as integral to this relationship as the mushrooms. Many mushrooms will only grow on certain types of trees for example or in the case of micorhizal fungi like chanterelles they will only form a transactional relationship with certain types of oak trees. The existence of these trees is just as important to keeping this ecosystem alive as the mushrooms. Often these trees aren't thriving in my area due to climate change and non-native pest issues caused by human interaction with that environment. I know that foraging mushrooms is really trendy right now, but in all likelihood it is probably really harmful in practice. There has been one short term study on one species of mushroom that suggests in the short term, picking mushrooms makes more pop up the next year. This study has been used by negligent foragers to justify pillaging the forests year after year. There are a lot of problems with this logic. The first being one study is not a body of scientific literature. The second being that it was a short term study that didn't study the long term effects of foraging. The third is that these results are likely misleading when you consider the reproductive impetus of a fungus. Often times a fungus creates mushrooms only as it is running out of resources in a given place so it can spread spores to a place where there is more food or moisture present. What this could suggest is that if you pick mushrooms one year and more pop up the next year, that mushroom is trying to spread to a new location because you damaged it's present location. Often the trees that the mushroom relies on for food also rely on that mushroom for some type of nutrient exchange, so by damaging the mycelial networks, you are damaging the trees. This is not a sustainable practice and I see this visibly in places where people forage a lot. The trees look like shit. They are dying and eventually the mushrooms stop popping up as well actually. So if people are going to build this stupid mushroom spirituality, the least they could do is treat the mushrooms with even the slightest bit of reverence. Stop foraging, start cultivating. I know its harder, but its the right thing to do to protect what's left of the biosphere.
