ecobee's "smart" thermostat is kinda dumb. The eco+ mode decided that, even though I had the setpoint at 26ºC, it was going to change it to 24. This resulted in the A/C turning on during peak rates.
I disabled eco+ for the rest of the day.
Hey ecobee, I chose 26 because it's still comfortable and my house on even the hottest days doesn't heat up enough to turn the A/C on until after 7 PM when the rates are lowest. You trying to outsmart me is actually costing me money.
For now, my top company for customer support is #ecobee. They’ve repeatedly gone beyond where even I thought I deserved for issues I’ve had.
The bottom continues to be any #Alphabet property. What keeps #Facebook from the bottom is their good support for their open-source projects.
#ecobee's software behaves … oddly. During summer days I have my thermostat set to 26ºC, which even on the hottest days my house never reaches so the A/C stays off conserving energy. I also use the eco+ option, so ecobee sets my thermostat to 27ºC to offset peak loads. Except today. Today I see their iPhone app and web site say the setting is 29.5, the thermostat says 28, and their API goes real wonky changing from 26 mid-peak to on-peak of 27.1, 24.1, 23.8, 27.8 and now 28.2. Like WTF?!
@baldwinjed I've been using #homeassistant for about 5 years. Primarily for monitoring the alarm system sensors with #konnected, controlling the #ecobee HVAC, and a bunch of TP-link wifi smart plugs.
Example of an automation I setup is to turn on the lights in the back yard if I open the back door after sunset.

#ecobee recovered at around 12:30 EDT today, but every time I tried to access their API I was receiving an error 500 (internal server error). Normally, I can't do anything to correct *their* errors, but what the hell, I forced a refresh of the access tokens and magically everything started to work. Why they couldn't have simply expired all tokens when they "fixed" their system will forever remain a mystery.
Loving the new #ecobee interface. My thermostats just got a major redesign for free. Much more attractive and user-friendly.

I've had an Ecobee for years that is connected to a Ubiquiti AP with a hidden SSID.
About a month ago, it decided to start perma-dropping its wireless connection, requiring me to delete and re-enter SSID before it will reconnect.
After a couple days, it drops again.
Ecobee support says hidden SSIDs have never worked with the device and that my setup is unsupported. But if that were true, I would have sent it back on day one.
Anyone else struggle with #ecobee and hidden #ubiquiti SSIDs?
I analyzed my #ecobee #thermostat's "Smart" Recovery feature and… it's all over the map.
• It finishes anywhere from 8 minutes early to a whopping 30 minutes late into the peak energy rate.
• It overshoots 53% of the days, which is much less than I thought. It should always err on the side of finishing early.
• There's a 5 or more minute delta 57% of the time.
This is pretty awful after two years of learning.
I'm no stats expert so it's hard for me to draw conclusions other than I'm not happy.
@TWSheppard It may have been an update. I just got an update to my #ecobee last week. Looks to have been firmware as well as app because the display changed. They may have tightened up the code.
I think I was just witness to a miracle. My #ecobee #thermostat actually managed to preheat the house before the peak electricity rates kicked in at 17:00. It always seemed to overshoot by 10 to 15 minutes into the peak rate. It's supposed to adapt to the heating rate of the home, but never seemed to. My old Honeywell thermostat was very good at calculating how soon it needed to preheat.
I have all the data from the ecobee API. I just need to analyze it to see how close it usually gets.
@ncweaver @dave_aitel I can also recommend #Ecobee as it's a good product, and if you really want local control you can do so via HomeKit or a HomeKit emulator in #HomeAssistant.
I changed my #ecobee schedule to move the time I go to sleep an hour earlier and it destroyed the whole schedule discarding other changes throughout the day. So now I have to rebuild the entire schedule. How many years has ecobee been around and they screw up something this trivial?! I hate crappy, untested software.
the nice thing about a "smart" thermostat in your home is that when the provider's website goes down you can't do anything with it remotely even if you're on the same network
Just sayin' #ecobee, maybe try having a "LAN fallback" option
#amwriting which means I'm here on Mastodon doing anything but (no joke, this is actually a key part of my process).
So to my #HomeAssistant folks, temp monitoring might be the easiest and most useful thing I can set up as a first project (I'd like to do real-time camera monitoring and maybe lights and music later). What #temperature sensors would you recommend to pair with #RaspberryPi and an #EcoBee? Cost is a factor, don't want to break the bank. Assume they'll only sense air temp.

@rabcyr You have alternatives if you want a “smart” thermostat. We have an #Ecobee here. They have a good #privacy stance and record as far as I know. They notably stood up to #Amazon when they were threatened with getting their products dropped from the latter’s site if they didn’t report more data from the (optional) #Alexa features. https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/15/22386086/amazon-strong-arm-power-ecobee-antitrust-tech

ecobee has released a UI refresh for their iOS app. It doesn't address some silly inefficiencies, but it does work better.
However, they haven't fixed the main issue I have with the thermostat in that it's supposed to save me money. It has a "smart" recovery option where it's supposed to learn to preheat the house to avoid the high energy rate times. While my Honeywell was good at this, ecobee fails every day by overshooting at least 10 minutes into the peak rate.
@zachsimone I can use #HomeKit automations to read the temps and then adjust my Ecobee thermostat - but its way complicated and interferes with the #ecobee scheduling and sensing anyway, and unless Ecobee decides to support the data in their scheduling it’s just way too much effort for little gain.
@scottrut I had one out of three do a similar thing, but I finally got them all updated. They now show temp & humidity. Now we need #ecobee to let us use them as additional sensors (which they probably won’t do because they want you to buy their sensors, but it would be nice to at least have the option)
Feels good to wake up and get in a early #Hiit #workout. Also it’s great to have the day off too! Happy #Monday☀️
New smart thermostat is being installed today! The third and final zone of the house. House is moving along quite nicely 😎 Do you have any smart products in your home? What’s your take on it? #homekit #modern #Technology #tech #ecobee
Also plans to relax and do some #gaming. Yesterday did not go so well for that. Something always comes up. Oh well. The life as an #parent / #Adult
