…and just before we left, we luckily remembered to take another group picture! So this is the Hohenheim modelling group after an inspiring week at in Leipzig!
Now we’re heading home, a bit tired, but our heads are full of new ideas… 🤩

(Credits go to our photographer @Louzula! Thanks for taking this great picture!)

There were so many fantastic talks today at , it’s impossible to decide which one was best. But the award for the best presentation slide clearly goes to Lynn Govaert for explaining the sandwich… 🤣

"Elucidating the evolutionary process of animal adaptation to deserts is key
to understanding adaptive responses to climate change."

This is how the abstract on a paper on fox evolutionary adaptation begins.

I wonder why frame it this way, why start your paper abstract with a reference to climate change.

I wonder, is climate change a "hot topic" (pun intended) in where specific framing can give you clicks? (ie citations)

Or is there something else at play, where we're trying to reference the in papers that are tangentially related to it?

Sometimes it looks pretty funny, kind of like:
"yeah the world is burning, anyway here's wonderwall"

Honestly, to me, it reads as a coping mechanism for scientists to talk about climate change, and in ways, absolving them from engaging with the moral right to do something meaningful about it.

What are we but glorified beaurocrats? And in this beaurocratic way, we end up doing what we know the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion departments do in any institution (spoiler alert; nothing).

Nothing but talk about it.

Discourse for absolving us from responsibility.

Prayers to Descartes In The Sky.

Thanks to @officialSMBE for making space for climate activism and to @SanjaHakala, @gaston and @AudreyBras for facilitating an engaging workshop yesterday.

It was great to be able to chat openly about and together with a room full of evolutionary biologists, geneticists and ecologists yesterday.

See you on the streets!

I hear there's a last minute change to the conference program: a whole new poster session has emerged impromptu in Poll degli Adelardi AD-A1, featuring @ScientistRebellion groups and campaigns from around the world.

If you're concerned that it's 35+ degrees outside and crops across Italy are boiling in the heat, then come meet scientist-rebels TODAY at lunch time and find out how you can help !

Using genetic mobile elements researchers showed yellow baboons in western Tanzania received genetic input from three distinct lineages.
".. mobile elements are responsible for some genetic diversity, but not all differences. Their activity, or rate of movement, is also variable between species, including at different times. While baboons currently are on "fast forward," orangutans, for example, are almost on pause. Humans are somewhere in between..... The processes by which they impact the genome are called insertional mutagenesis, transduction and recombination. Tracking the insertions, which is Batzer's specialty, offers two advantages in establishing shared or separate ancestry..
"We now believe mobile elements are one of the single biggest driving forces impacting genomes, and not just among primates, but across many mammals and many non-mammalian systems as well," Batzer said.

Happy to see this out! Not only because Martin Petr's tool is incredibly useful for anyone doing evolutionary simulations, but also because it's been peer reviewed though a system that doesn't profiteer off academic work, nor impose paywalls on its readers!
