At some point, we'll have to have the discussion about the approaching launch of Meta on the fediverse and what this server, ecoevo.social, should do about it (i.e. to block it or not). I'm still undecided myself about this but feel free to raise your concerns or thoughts under this post.

If you haven't followed Meta will soon launch a micro-blogging plateform that is supposed to one day be connected to the fediverse through activitypub.

What this will give us is the possibility to search for any text on the server content (not the entire fediverse), not only hashtags.

#EcoEvoSocial thanks for the useful and diverse feedback. It is reassuring for me as my position is that I use the active voice most frequently but I allow myself to also use passive voice, especially in methods (e.g. ‘Birds were sampled’). I know some academics are dogmatic about not using the passive voice and wanted to check if this was a shared view/general rule!

@AnneCharmantier #ecoevosocial Active voice! I was trained early to use passive, then took a career-changing scientific writing course with @clauswilke . It just feels good to state clearly, directly what you did in a Methods section, and takes fewer words (reduced "sentence lard", as Claus called it 🧈😂).

@AnneCharmantier Hi Anne, you'd be better using the hashtag #EcoEvoSocial as @ecoevosocial is just a fallback account I created in case the instance went down. Sorry this is a bit misleading. This is not a group or anything.

But it might be a good idea for me to create a bot that boosts when it's tagged by a server user!

@flodebarre if it's something that people want here on #EcoEvoSocial we could consider using elasticsearch for server-wide full text search. But that costs extra money, which we have with donations right now. You would be very welcome on the server @flodebarre.

That said since the beginning I've been reluctant to add this add-on because it consumes extra resources, meaning also extra energy, for something I personally can live without. But with enough demand for it I'd consider it.

There seems to be an ongoing issue with some OVH server we depend on. So expect server errors while this is being resolved by our hosting platform.

I've only been here a few days, but I've taken to Mastodon far quicker than other social media.

I appreciate the accessibility that's built in. I had set up bot notifications on Twitter to remind me to put alt text, and on Instagram I generally camel-case hashtags, but most users don't so it felt like a token gesture. Here it's baked in.

And perhaps having a specific interest helps. Finding the ecoevo server immediately felt like home.

@alxsim Because you have asked us users, I will say that cannot vote as my voice was not exactly there: I think ALL journals making money from the research from the kind of people at ecoevo.social is okay to be allowed at ecoevo.social as long as they give a financial contribution to ecoevo server.

Just ethical stuff seen from money pov. Ethical publishing is still somewhat arbitrary: people are pushing their views here and there. Not sure which one to follow.

@alxsim I'd vote not. I hope that for-profit journals connect with scientists via the fediverse. But, given their general opposition to open science, ecoevo.social should not be their home. They can host an instance or join an instance whose members support their profit model. I have little doubt I'll be able to find the Nature bot if I want to, whatever instance they live on...

But what do we do about for-profit journals?

My position is that journals managed by societies are welcome, but what about the other ones? Do we allow them on the server?

My personal view is that they shouldn't be allowed here as they are not contributing back to the community (#AcademicParasites).
