Just published in @Nature with @unaipasku et al: paper based on @ipbes where we underline the need to shift social & institutional values away from emphasis on GDP growth & material accumulation to community-based, sustainability aligned values. Plus check out the fab new IPBES values typology!

International negotiators just missed a deadline to regulate deep-sea mining. Now what?

"A low-impact mining industry is unlikely to materialize in the absence of ISA rules governing environmental standards and oversight. However, if a company submits a commercial deep-sea mining application before the ISA completes those rules — officially called the Mining Code — the agency will be legally obligated to consider the request nonetheless. Some industry watchdogs fear this will trigger a literal race to the bottom, in which companies destroy fragile seafloor ecosystems in the pursuit of profits."

But: there is NO such thing as a "low-impact mining industry." A total ban on this necrocapitalist extractivism is called for. The profiteers and their "green liberal" sycophants argue that if we want solar energy, etc., we should just lie down and accept. The lynchpin is their unspoken assumption that capitalist growth with its attendant consumerism must continue. We need to tear their shit down.

The Intercept writer Christopher Ketchum makes the incredibly important point that the biodiversity crisis is NOT reducible to the climate crisis, although there are numerous links. Ditto other biospheric crises. theintercept.com/2022/12/03/cl
