Friends, it's a new academic year, and I come with news for those of you interested in #PoliticalEconomy, the development of the #UnitedStates (political and economic), and the US in a #comparative framework.
Noam Maggor, Sofia Valeonti, Ariel Ron and I are launching a new website: https://www.politicaleconomylab.org/
It's a companion to our scholarly discussions on all of the above, and to our monthly Zoom seminar (and after our Paris conference of last May).
Come check it out!

Ireland’s population density declines due to famine & emigration. That’s what makes the recent increases in population so welcome. Ireland is not full https://n.respublicae.eu/irishfamineproj/status/1671891436286132226

🚨New Working Paper🚨
Has technology ever caused mass job loss?
Yes! This paper shows a group of innovations eliminated jobs that had employed more than 10% of the 🇬🇧 population.

The ethnic favouritism in Africa literature might need a rethink, I argue in a new co-authored paper.

The Dutch are currently debating their history of #slavery. Jan Luiten van Zanden (@JanLuitenV@twitter.com), in a first guest post on Our Long Walk, points to their contradictory history.

@tomwestland it’s not #econhist by any stretch of the imagination but Wareen Dean’s With Broadax and Fire has mostly an economic interpretive framework.

In this presentation I ultimately argue that energy regime and living standards are tightly connected. I calculated food balance sheet (production minus trade minus non food uses) and conclude that the food available in Western Mexico was barely meeting minimum requirements. Work mules
accounted for a large portion of the use of grain production showing importance of energy regime in living standards. #econhist #envhist
I began 2023 by rereading Cole Harris’ classic The Resettlement of British Columbia
https://www.ubcpress.ca/the-resettlement-of-british-columbia
It is a master class in the judicious, nuanced and yet comprehensive reading of sources and always elegant writing. It is worth reading even if you have little interest in BC. So sad to lose him in 2022 https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-historical-geographer-explored-the-intersection-of-people-and-places/

One of the most fascinating graphs in economic history and the social sciences in general
(reminded of it when a student from three years ago stopped by my office to tell me he still thought about it)
Do we have too many immigrants today in the US by historical standards?
Nope
But are they less mobile than they used to be one century ago?
Still no
But are they dangerous and committing crimes at a higher rate than US-born individuals?
No way

Reclaiming Indigenous place names is a powerful vehicle for narrating history & inscribing the landscape with meaning, just as colonial place names and naming practices have contributed to colonial stories about the land and its inhabitants. Still relevant in many colonized regions. See brief by @danrueck & Christina Gray https://yellowheadinstitute.org/2019/10/08/reclaiming-indigenous-place-names/

It seems common practice to provide an introduction here.
I'm a professor in economic history, particularly interested in the history of colonialism and slavery from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Geographically, my research has mainly been engaging with the Americas and Africa.

Great article, new in Social Science History, 'Wealth mobility in the US: 1860–1870' by Brandon Dupont & Joshua Rosenbloom uses a new linked census sample to show Civil War & slave emancipation reduced mean wealth & inequality in the South but the movement of individual wealth was highly volatile in both regions. Wealth status was much more fluid than today.
