#introduction Part 8: traction
In 2020 we converted our #socialenterprise #construction company into an #employeeowned #coop, & #SeedCommons & its local affiliate #Baltimore Roundtable for #EconomicDemocracy (#BRED) invested $1.5MM & we started building our #IREP. Covid slowed us a bit, but this fall Seed/BRED approved another $1.1MM & we purchased our 9th rowhome. In 2023 we hope to get to 30. We are hiring. We are rebuilding neighborhoods. Workers & tenants own the wealth they are creating.

@rwba: Just as a disclaimer I do not like corporations that are not democratised and the obscenely wealthy people that run them. Especially large ones. Because of that, I call for things that they will not like for the most part. #WorkplaceDemocracy

What I have noticed among them is they tend to heavily push #philanthropy to make themselves look good whilst not actually solving the issues since doing so may threaten their wealth and power. What they really tend to dislike is if you propose to tax them, as Rutger Bregman has found out in the Davos World Economic forums.

This is one of the reasons I call for #TaxJustice - because whilst philanthropy may help some of the problems within our societies, it will ultimately be minuscule compared to the things that can be done via #taxes and tax justice.

Many of the loudest centrist supporters of democracy fail to acknowledge how limited our current democracies are.

If democracy is to survive and successfully tackle the many crises facing us in coming decades, it must be strengthened in both the public and private sphere.

I think it is (was?🤞🏻) an unhealthy use of social media for me, constant refreshing/scrolling, jonesing for the latest snort of indignation or triumph the top mainstream press coverage pushed. The other thing Twitter gave us though was niche news (for me, #ElSalvador , #Baltimore , #Defi, #capitalism critique, #economicdemocracy , #socialenterprise , #history , #firstnations , #impactinvestment + even tinier subsets/intersections of these)…

Bummer (to me).

This is one of the features or bugs of the ESOP model, depending on how you look at it. In the "broad-based employee ownership" space, I perceive there to be two (mostly implicit) ideologies: #SharedCapitalism (#ESOP) and #EconomicDemocracy (#Coop).

The former views the profitable sale of an EO company as a triumph, since the increased value of the firm is broadly shared. 1/

IMHO whichever form it takes paying #capital is not helping #EconomicDemocracy.
#cooperatives must not borrow money, they must be subsidized by a socialization of wages done in a single massive fund, democratically oriented, and financed by a single interprofessional cotisation. As pioneered by #France's #RégimeGénéral of #SocialSecurity since 1946. Which massively subsidized parenting in the 50's, hospitals in the 60's, pensions in the 70's, until the State was able to crush it hard

...the amount of time their capital has been in the fund. So, for instance, if I invest $50 in y1, and someone else invests $100 in y2, then, at the end of y2, each investor would get 50% of the return, because they each have 100 dollar years.

Still wrapping my head around all the implications, but it's quite the novel approach, and I'm curious to see if any of the other #coops nerds on here have thoughts.
