Turns out the "red in tooth and claw" view of nature is not quite right. Cooperation is essential to life.

“In the more than a century since, symbioses have been found to play an essential role in the development and survival of almost every organism. Humans, animals, plants, coral and insects all depend heavily on microbes, which, in turn, depend on their hosts. Consider the gut bacteria that support human and animal health, the algae that power coral reefs, or the mitochondria that make our cells run. It turns out that these give-and-take relationships with the microbiome are essential to life on earth. They are so universal and paramount, in fact, that earlier this year, some scientists called for a wholesale remapping of Darwin’s Tree of Life to take them into account.”

I am honoured and grateful to have an abridged version of my essay "Home" featured in the latest copy of Britain's wonderful Resurgence Magazine (Jan/Feb issue) ~ themed Immersion. Thanks also to Gavin et all at the Center of Humans & Nature for their kindness in authorising permission.

Maintenance = gratitude.

Maintaining your vehicle = expressing gratitude for your freedom and mobility.

Maintaining relationships = expressing gratitude for the people you love.

Maintaining the earth = expressing gratitude for your home.

You don’t need to *say* thanks—behave in ways that are consistent with your thankfulness.

@ClimateHuman please, please, please consider calling for egalitarian ecoliteracy tailored for bioregions as foundation to ALL education (sci inclusive, of course, but not just science). Cradle to grave. No one left behind on life systems understanding and cultural acceptance - collective value shift - deep change across all sectors.

On moral imagination (overlooked, yet vitally human), I contend it may be useful to provide new forms of creative analogy (positive & negative) within non-fiction to support. Obvious magic without insult to truth? I call them "miratics". Here is the recording I made beside the River Lugg for presentation to the English Shared Futures conference hosted by MMU this summer.

As an ecophilosopher and writer, I ask this of our modern Western culture... if the sym-ial is so fundamental to life and evolution, why do we continue to value individualism, unitisation, division, and competition/hierarchy between all as superior? Perhaps, just perhaps, this question is key to why daily life is, consequentially, in such disharmony with any flourishing biosphere.

Biden's latest tweet explains so much about global inequity and biospheric decline. The pride of it! Power/money/state... win/lose. It's not how nature truly sustains itself over generations and between species. Cooperation, collaboration, symbiotic mutualisms, and Ethics of Care are the dominant processes that are truly life-sustaining. Centre these behaviours instead.

Otter spraint, full of glittery fish scales, quietly degrades on the roots of an alder tree, which stabilises the riverbank against flood. A strong signal for both otters (territorial and route finding), and us, alike.

Ps even shit can be a beautiful organic, life-sustaining process. At what point do we/ought we judge? ;)

Just for clarity, I will challenge normative values, including beauty. If someone replies they think a puffball is as ugly as shit, I"ll probably mute. A puffball evolved millions of years ago to spore by the gentle pressure of a falling raindrop or more recently the nudge of a deer hoof. Magnificence and beauty are not generally well represented in Western thought.

My neologisms, just offerings made of my own linguistic rootedness (not intended to appropriate), to aid understanding of our collective challenges... a kind of celebration, but also a critique.

Conscious of an ever present sense of stressful urgency to resolve "problems" of the Anthropocene. Like the volatilities of a mountain stream eroding the mountain. So few still consider those quieter acts in deeper waters, mud floors, where real richness lays. Where we humans can't "see" so well in the murk. Difficult emotions. Value conflicts. Where the sturgeon spend key moments strengthening their wellbeing before the great upstream and eternally risky swim.
