The Curse of the Hidden Vault (1964) is a typical early Rialto Edgar Wallace krimi. In other words it's hugely entertaining. Some good plot twists and visually impressive and imaginative, especially the wonderful hidden vault complex sets. Plus, Klaus Kinski!

The Hound of Blackwood Castle (1968), one of the later colour German Rialto Edgar Wallace krimis, with a bit of a Hound of the Baskervilles vibe this time. A visual delight, with the gothic trappings laid on extra thick. Hugely enjoyable.

The Man with the Glass Eye (1969) is a late entry in Rialto's German Edgar Wallace krimi cycle. Maybe not the equal of the classic early krimis (and with a bit more blood) but rather enjoyable with some nice slightly surreal touches.

The Green Ribbon is a 1929 Edgar Wallace thriller involving an ingenious horse-racing racket with a large and varied collection of villains. And an elaborate system of caves and tunnel, a classic Wallace touch. Top-tier Wallace. Great stuff.

Accidental Death (1963), a solid entry in the British Edgar Wallace crime thriller cycle. The plot has some far-fetched elements but it’s enjoyable and has a few oddball touches that do give it an Edgar Wallace flavour.

The Red Circle (1960), the second of Rialto's German Edgar Wallace krimis. There's a blackmail racket, a question of inheritance, a sexy bad girl and lots of murders. Well-paced, well-crafted, stylish and wildly and deliriously entertaining.

The Verdict (1964) is a British Edgar Wallace B-movie. It concerns a gangster and a dubious visa which is a clue to a murder 20 years earlier. Well-made, well-acted, fast-moving, witty and clever with an intricate plot that works perfectly.

So just did a thing and uploaded a slideshow to YouTube with posters, lobby cards and promotional images for the Rialto Edgar Wallace Krimi DER HEXER aka THE MYSTERIOUS MAGICIAN based on Wallace's novel THE RINGER.

Hope you like. I may do more along those lines sometime in the future.

Number Six (1962), one of the low-budget British Edgar Wallace B-movies made at Merton Park Studios.

The police are rather interested in a Mr Valentine. His rich girlfriends seem to keep dying.

This one has a very clever and deliciously nasty little plot.

New Year, new me...

Started 2023 with getting my podcast cherry popped and together with fellow guest Adrian Smith appeared on CULT CONNECTIONS to discuss three films adapted from (or at least inspired by) Edgar Wallace, one of them a Krimi:

The Dark Eyes of London (1939)
Der Hexer (1964)
Five Golden Dragons (1967)

The Terror, based on a 1938 Edgar Wallace play, owes quite a bit to the Old Dark House genre so popular at the time.

It starts with a daring gold robbery. Later two of the thieves (including the great Alastair Sim) think they've been cheated. Then there's a series of murders at a country house.

A lighthearted mystery romp. Lots of fun.

The Black Abbot (Der schwarze Abt), a 1963 entry in the West German Edgar Wallace krimi film series.

The story has all the classic Edgar Wallace ingredients, mixed to perfection. There are possibly ghosts, there’s the mysterious Black Abbot. And countless secret passageways. Lots of double-crosses. Greed and madness. There’s love and lust. And an ancient map which could reveal a treasure’s location.

Edgar Wallace’s The Feathered Serpent (published in 1932) is a typical Wallace thriller. It has murder and secret societies and old grudges that demand to be settled. And it's non-stop fun.
