If you find yourself reaching for the words smiled, nodded, stood, paused, took in and let out a deep breath in your dialogue, it’s a sign your characters need to be doing something while they talk. Let them smoke a cigar. Go grocery shopping. Observe what is happening around them. Anything but smiling, nodding, pausing, and breathing, lest you want a snooze fest on your page.
