Sorry for my barrage of EDSA revolution related posts today. February 25 is the anniversary of the People Power Revolution in the Philippines.
There might be a minority of Filipinos here in the Fediverse but I think, what happened and Filipinos did 37 yrs ago are great reminders for the rest of the world, including us, that #democracy can be won thru true collective efforts. We need to remember always.

“How can there be reconciliation when there are continuing human rights violations, silencing, and criminalization of dissent, on top of the continuing economic suffering of the people?”
Precisely.

Ms Taguiwalo says their return is down to the revolt's unrealised promise of a better life for Filipinos: "Millions are still poor while billionaires are getting richer. That disillusionment is the major reason."
"I've realised now that People Power is a marathon, not a sprint," says Ms Taguiwalo who is sitting out the anniversary march on Saturday.

This is why using 'holiday economics' as the reason for declaring yesterday a holiday is stupid. Yesterday, a Friday and NOT the date for the EDSA Revolution anniversary, was declared a non-working holiday but TODAY, a saturday and the ACTUAL date of the EDSA Revolution anniversary is not a holiday. So if one is required to work on saturdays, they don't have a long weekend.
Also goes to show that the non-working aspect is more important than the commemoration of EDSA.

“I don’t think it could be more ironic,” says Aries Arugay, chair of the political science department at the University of the Philippines Diliman. “This is what happens when you bring despots and their scions back to power.”
