Paintings by Edward Burne Jones in The Flower Book (1882-1898) inspired by names of flowers. According to Georgiana, his wife, painting these were the "most soothing piece of work that he ever did".

In The Hesperides, Burne-Jones used three views of Mary Zambaco, with whom he was in love. He wrote "Hers was a wonderful head, neither profile was like the other quite - and the full face was different again." Her face, from various angles, shows up repeatedly in his work.
