5/26金観覧。ゴーリーの展示は何度か観ているが、これほどまとまった数の既刊本の原画を見たのは初めてだった。なかでも強く胸に迫ってきたのが、2020年発表の、バレリーナを題材にした『金箔のコウモリ』の原画だった。街で拾われた少女がバレエと出会ってバレリーナとしての頂点に立つが、成功とは裏腹に彼女の日常はいつも侘しかった、というお話に、すごく自分自身と重なるところを感じてしまった。

大きな成功ではないが、地元にいたままだったらすれ違うことすらできなかった人々にたくさん出会えた。そんな恵まれた人生なのに、心の中はいつも乾いている。出会った人々の顔ぶれは確かに凄かった。では、お前の価値は？…と、もう一人の自分が常に問いかけてくるような……ひとからは決して見えない苦しい人生を送ってきた。

ゴーリーの絵は、自己の中に巣食うネガティブな部分を照らす鏡だと思う。6/11日まで。

Has anyone read Edward Gorey or read Edward Gorey to little ones? Some of my 50-word Halloween pieces reminded a writing colleague of these tiny stories. I'm thinking of purchasing one, like the Gashlycrumb Tinies. I did look at a sample online and like the idea of these tiny self-contained horrors.

He is #Goth royalty and some would say the original.

I have been obsessed with his work since I was a kid.

The faux engraving aesthetic with the ukiyo-E meets the Greek pottery style of laying out a page. The silent film narratives that he is telling with all these images are laced with dark irony in a picture book format.

He loved books and cats and had many friends at the time of his passing.

So let's do a recap.

Friday (last week) I woke up with a sore throat. Saturday: full-blown flu symptoms. Sunday: same crap. Monday: sore throat, cough, and sniffling. Tuesday: cough and sniffling. Wednesday: sniffling and slight cough. Same through the rest of the week to today. Worked Thursday, Friday, and today to make up for lost time. When I came home today, I fed the cats and crashed for a 1.5-hour "nap".
