I feel like I'm going crazy trying to solder QFN smd components (and even my SOT attempts have been rough). They just... don't work. So I designed an SMD playground circuit. It's got 4, cheap smd components each with a different i2c address and I can just scan them to see how many I got right, lol. #ee

If I go upstairs, hold my phone in just the right position and hope that the weather is just right, then I sometimes get this fabulous, superfast 5G signal of 2.23 Mbps down, 0.34 Mbps up. Thought I'd give it a go because we've just had a power cut so the WiFi is down. Ah the joys of living in a village that #EE doesn't care about despite endless complaints. It actually gets worse year by year. There was a time when we had full signal bars, now practically nothing.

Would anyone be interested in seeing a small #hardware project that demos #electronic #control systems?

Today, #EE undergrads learn to use CAD/CAM tools, specifically VHDL and Verilog. But these HDLs are the 1980s technology.

These HDLs are structurally declarative, but they are behaviourally imperative. There are several purely functional alternatives, like μFP, Daisy, Hydra, Lava, Clash, etc., but they are either immature or are ensconced in academia. The industry is still stuck on VHDL, Verilog, and their proprietary descendants.

Frankly, these HDLs are getting very stale, despite regular updates to their respective #IEEE specifications.

When I was a wee lad entering #software development (in the 1980s), most of us came from #EE and #CS backgrounds. And it was a common practice that each of us had small, pet projects—signal processing, image processing, hardware simulators, computer graphics, graph algorithms, networking protocols, programming languages, operating systems, chess engines, approximate polynomial algorithms for NP-complete problems, etc.—that we used to hone our theoretical and practical skills. These were toy problems, for sure; but they had heft, nonetheless. And we didn't just hack up the code; we studied the underlying theories, before we implement something, even a toy project.

This was what I was referring to, when I posted earlier about "daily practice routine" for #programmers. I've tried to inculcate this good, life-long habit in my younger colleagues, without success.

These days, most software practitioners see themselves as mere coders, not programmers, and they feel no need to improve themselves, since they've already mastered JavaScript or Python syntax. This attitude is detrimental to the longevity of their careers.

These kids are swamped with having to maintain millions of lines of buggy code that their predecessors had cobbled together off StackOverview. There is no requirements, no specifications, no design, and no one person who understands the entire system.

Furthermore, their non-technical managers are always pounding them to keep raising their "commits", which is now the key metric used in promotion and pay rise.

As such, in just a couple of months of starting employment, eager youngsters turn into jaded code-pasters who experience no fulfilment in programming.

I've never seen a #Fairlight #CMI—the OG of all #samplers—in person. But I saw this footage of Peter Vogel demonstrating the CMI when I was an #EE undergrad in the early 1980s.

I attribute the CMI for seeding my life-long fascination with #DSP.

I've seen a musician with the Circle of Fifths tattoo upon his forearm. I've seen a doctor who has a tattoo of Hermes's Caduceus, well hidden under his duty coat. I've also seen a lawyer with the Scales of Justice tattoo on his upper arm.

But I've never seen an #EE with the IEEE logo tattoo, nor have I ever seen a #CS with the ACM logo tattoo. Commitment issues have we?

@georgloesel ich weiß nicht, mein Mitleid mit Frankreich hält sich in grenzen. Ja so ein Putsch ist vielleicht nicht schön, allerdings kann das auch nicht so schlecht sein, wenn es zu lasten von Kolonialisten geht.

Frankreich hat auch nicht erst seit dem Putsch ein AKW-Problem, sondern schon sehr lange, und es scheint sich wenig zu bewegen.
Sie hätten eine relativ gute Lage um auf #EE zu setzen, aber tun zu wenig (wie wir).
