I loved #Eurospy television when I was tiny. "The Protectors" was a huge fave. The excitement, the adventure, the glamour.

That was "back in the day" before the UK joined the #EEC now #EU, and then stupidly left. (Sigh.) "The Continent", as we called it back then, was a big and mysterious place full of "Heidi" and very #German dark forests and very Gallic #French and "continental quilts" a.k.a. duvets. Olive oil we now use for #cooking was sold in chemists not grocers!

@inglesongrey By the 1970s poor management had already gutted UK manufacturing. What was left was sold off and what couldn't be sold was killed off (#BritishLeyland ). Joining #EEC helped and UK still had, and bet the house on, #FinancialServices. That is no longer the case as Paris stock exchange overtakes London.
Yes, there may still be ingenuity and innovation, but to thrive they will probably need to move abroad.
