Good to see some fast moving high water in tributary creeks, south fork Eel River watershed. Next series of storms moving in. Flooding down stream predicted, mainstem Eel River.
Eel River is the third largest watershed in CA.
Steelhead are happy to have rains like this.

Our mailbox is a 15-minute drive down the road. Took a gander at the Eel River on the way home.
It is hard to capture how fast the current is flowing and how much water is in the river. Not very long ago, it was a trickle.
For context, the log floating down the river is a full-size large tree.
You gotta wonder what we did wrong around here?

@Sunny Love that area, I was in Coos Bay, Oregon for 35 years, Redwoods were an easy daytrip.
Daughter was at Humboldt State for 4 years.
California though...it's a tough one for #Vanlife.

These things are related. The Eel River drainage has some of the highest bed load transport of sediment of any west coast river, especially surprising given its far lower discharge. This is attributed to the fact that the extensive faulting system from the Mendocino Fault Zone come ashore into the Eel River Valley.

This area has gone through some stuff…and it is reflected in the sediment load.

Scrambled over concrete barriers, skipped down a muddy path, and scaled a few mossy boulders to get a picture of Fernbridge this morning. Spanning the diminished Eel River, the bridge, built in 1911, is an all-concrete span of 1320 feet. Years ago, the bridge was closed to traffic for potential flooding. Crazy kid that I was, I decided to take a walk on the bridge. The river cresting at over 20 ft. with redwood logs rushing toward me was an experience.

I'm looking west over the Eel River Valley from my deck this cold but clear morning. The Eel River is the third largest watershed in California, and I am always happy to see water. I would love to see the river go back to the river it was when I was young. I know it isn't realistic, but I continue to hope for a miracle.
