One thing that sort of saved me was that I initially tried to plug the two drives into a dock and use dd to clone them. Well, it was very slow (hours). So I gave up part way. But it actually helped cuz it had already copied over the GRUB loader onto the new SSD. That helped me boot from a Debian net-install USB stick. I learned some GRUB commands. I have a couple of #Linux laptops which have #firmware updates available, but they’re not running anything with #LVFS/etc installed.

Q: Is there a Linux distro designed to do (LVFS-based?) firmware upgrades on machines like these, when simply booted from a USB stick?

I /can/ dig into #EFI stuff if needed, but from memory I’d really *really* prefer not to … 🙄

@SebastienK that claim doesn't hold water considering the unfixable mess of #AMD64 / #ix86 and the unfixable #bloat that is #UEFI.

So far no details on #GPU compatibility.

Also I'm shure Apple won't do #ARM64+#EFI - Standard setups but do a shitload of customizations in it.

I ran into a bug where if you install #Debian onto a thumb drive, it won't boot. To be clear, I had a thumb drive with an installer, and another thumb drive that I was installing onto.

So I spent the past 4 hours trying to figure out how to fix my thumb drive installation and, if possible, determine what happened. My hard work paid off!

@marcan @AsahiLinux Yeah, I know ~why~ they did it and from their perspective that's all fine - basically like the @Raspberry_Pi having no #EFI and simply a bootcode EEPROM...

It just makes programming stuff quite annoying cuz there isn't some basic #llvmpipe-style fallback but one propably has to fully initialize the attached display and it's parameters - whereas for the MacBooks that's not needed due to the panel configuration being static.
