Rococo plasterwork. Croome Park Rotunda, c. 1760. I love seeing the striations of the plasterers’ tools, visible only in raking light and invisible to the naked eye. Work both exquisite and exemplary.

Sphinx. 1795. Coade stone or Lithodipyra. Croome Park. Coade Stone is a fascinating medium and Eleanor Coade a fascinating woman.

"September 16, 1784

The voluntary declaration and deposition on oath of ELIZABETH BRETT, Spinster... she perceived a man in it; that the person in the Machine, which she knew not what to make of, but which the person in it called an Air Balloon, called to her to take hold of the rope, which she did accordingly; that John Mills and George Philips, labourers with said Mr. Thomas Read, came up soon after, and being likewise requested to assist in holding the rope, both made their excuses, one of them, George Philips, saying he was too short, and John Mills saying that he did not like it..."

Contrast my last of an with these ‘new’ ones walked today. post- lane. Unnaturally courses, drawn by , unsympathetic to the grain of the country. They speak of , , the of , the rise of , the debasement of , and the eradication of . In more than one way, these lifeless lanes symbolise how we have destroyed in the last 200 years.

A beautiful eighteenth century, Grade II listed barn in a rather worrying state. Part of an extensive farmyard complex around the back of the Youngsbury estate north of Ware. I hope all those building materials in the yard will be put to good use.

1 March 1797.

Mr Custance… informed us… a Proclamation from the Privy Council had been issued, to stop paying in Cash at the Bank of England for some time, fearing… there would not be… enough to transact… urgent business… All Country Banks have done the same & are… shut up.

the Vathek gothic reads continues, in which I discuss evil, curiosity, and why gothic ladies are always so dangerous (hint, it's gendered domesticity politics)

Ended up at the page of a lady poet whose poem I already know well from a sung version. So then have to dig that out in iTunes! This in the new collection of Scottish 1730-1830. It includes a lot of Gaelic poems (Gaelic first then translated version after) and poems by women.

Supper and a new to read, a new collection of Scottish 1730-1830. Really looking forward to this. My own looked at Scottish reading habits in the same period, but I need to read more of the texts being read!

Browsing again a supposed ancestor's 1761 after-death inventory, and intrigued by the "tree of the Steuart family" in there. Then there's his list of 40 or so I really should do more with this. He previously owned Bowhill in and Glen in .

Exciting to see excavations where the earliest textile-machine shop in was built, 1780s. Later .

A vivid and brief exposure of some fixtures and fittings of a place I first researched for my DPhil 30 years ago.

Complicated, but the extension of Silver St. is clear. Maps and records will be important in interpreting findings.
