Let's start with the words and objects in the seller's left hand. He is holding a full sheet of paper with the words "Relation. Relation." on it. If a full sheet of paper is printed only on one side, we speak of a #broadside (print) or a broadsheet - #Einblattdruck in German.

Because oral, handwritten and printed news had many names and forms in early modern Europe, from avviso to gazette to zeitungen etc. "Relation" was one of these words used for news in German speaking Europe.
