In 1952, Dad was 23 and Mom 24, their first presidential election voted Eisenhower.
Ike was the last good Republican and is rolling in his grave.

En la noche del 1 de abril de 1960, el presidente Dwight #Eisenhower vio la primera imagen enviada desde el espacio por el satélite meteorológico TIROS 1 (Television InfraRed Observation Satellite), que tenía la forma, como bromeaban algunos, de "una enorme sombrerera".
TIROS puso de relieve nuestro creciente control de la naturaleza a través de la #Ciencia y la #Tecnología. Como lo describió entonces el #NewYorkTimes, este satélite y sus sucesores encerraban la promesa "de iluminar vastas zonas de oscuridad en la comprensión del clima por el hombre".

TIL the 1.8% and then 3.4% #inflation of 1956 and 1957 was so unexpected that #Eisenhower considered enacting #PriceControls. People used to consider inflation something that only happened during wartime.
This article focuses solely on the history and doesn't draw any conclusions. It mentions Milton Friedman and the #GoldStandard briefly but not the fact that the #Fed was created just before #WWI.

That is my understanding, of Hiroshima at least, that it was to keep #USSR out of #Japan; though, it's not the official reason. My understanding that #Eisenhower was very critical of this as a candidate.

Today in Labor History February 11, 1953: Cold War: U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower denied all appeals for clemency for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. The government executed them at Sing Sing in 1953. They had been convicted of espionage for the USSR. Their sons, Michael and Robert Meeropol (adopted by Abel Merepol, composer of the anti-lynching song “Strange Fruit,”), maintained their parents’ innocence. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union, decoded Soviet cables showed that their father had collaborated. They continued to fight for the mother’s pardon, but Obama refused to grant it.
