This isn't a new problem. Trump's Transportation Secretary #ElaineChao was a paragon of inaction and neglect, refusing even to meet with consumer advocacy groups. This is bad, because under US law, state attorneys general are not allowed to punish misbehaving airlines - that power vests solely and entirely with the Secretary of Transport.

I see former Secretary of Transportation #ElaineChao is back in the news given the #FAA troubles this morning.

Let me say this much... I do not think that Secretary #Buttigeig has done wonders for FAA reform and the #NHTSA (for automotive safety) is as ineffective as ever.

(And there is a hostile Congress to consider also.)

But, Secretary Chao was *by far* the worst Secretary of Transportation recent memory.

Secretary Chao set the #USDOT back years... maybe even a decade.

@mhoran1158 These claims seem to be untrue. Sen. McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, comes from a family with wealth in the shipping business, not road and bridge construction. She was indeed Secretary of Transportation, but for President Trump, not the state DoT which awards most contracts. I haven't found any reference to her giving $78 million to his campaign, which is an enormous sum of money.
