That thing where #Elasticsearch is absolutely not working like it did a week ago, but you changed nothing 😕

Anyone looking to run #elasticsearch in #docker with #colima shoud head to ~/.colima/default/colima.yaml and set the default RAM allocation to at least four times the default 2G.

#OpenObserve has an #Elasticsearch compatible API for log ingestion, but syslog-ng is not mentioned in the documentation. Luckily, as it turned out, OpenObserve has a ready to use #syslog_ng configuration example in the web UI.

Just learned that a wildcard (*) at the beginning of a search term in #Elasticsearch can increase searchtimes 10x. A * at the end of a search term makes no noticeable performance hit.

We are running #Elasticsearch on a #Raspberrypi 4B. CPU was not a problem despite it being a low powered device. RAM was!

On a 4GB RPi I could only allocate 512MB RAM and things were tight. I swapped in a 8GB RPi upped the Elasticsearch RAM to a more reasonable 2GB and all seems well. Elasticsearch is a memory hog not so much cpu.

@gulovsen @mastodonmigration @MastodonEngineering It’s about time! I have that on my own instance (or rather #ElasticSearch). I am glad #Mastodon is making full text search a reality. I have it on my #Misskey, #WordPress & #WriteFreely instances & it is phenomenal.

Similar to what happened to #ElasticSearch : #HashiCorp has changed the license for #Terraform - apparently to make more money - then someone starts a new fork and we have two different versions. Will we get OpenForm and TerraForm now, like OpenSearch and ElasticSearch? 🤨

@null So I just sat down to try this and it didn't seem to work, my ram usage after restart immediately goes to 70% no matter the file options. turns out that the jvm.options file says:

## WARNING: DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE. If you want to override the
## JVM options in this file, or set any additional options, you
## should create one or more files in the jvm.options.d
## directory containing your adjustments.

@jimcarroll I strolled through and it doesn't say anywhere if you enabled #elasticsearch as this, by default, uses 50% of your servers available ram. Also, do you ever restart your server? Like Linux "poweroff" restart?

Hmmm 🤔 #mastodon memory leak or I just don't understand how things work. #Sidekiq seemingly can handle all to jobs quite easily, yet after a couple days of my instance running without restarting, RAM usage grows quite high, talking 80% with #elasticsearch enabled on a 16 GB machine. Is it normal? Or does that mean memory leak somewhere? Maybe I should spend a week figuring out how to run another instance and load balance, but I feel this shouldn't be necessary for a single user instance...🤷🏻‍♂️

As a single user instance #mastoadmin, seeing the insane influx in resource usage just by enabling #elasticsearch makes me somehow think this isn't the solution people are hoping for in terms of searchability...how do servers like mastodon.social handle it? AFAIK, It uses HALF of your systems ram by default...if #mastodon is using the other half...the servers gonna grind to a halt. Just sayin. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️from 40-50% without elasticsearch, straight to 80% with it, on a SINGLE USER instance. Yikes.
