It looks like my harvest will be about half of what I was hoping. A whole lot of mature flower bunches have turned brown and dried out. Alas!

Some new additions to the garden, the strawberry was mishandled in shipping and had to replant so it has been stressed, the poor thing I hope it makes it.

@whitepineswhisper Thank you for multiplying the shrubs. I did not know they propagated from cuttings. We have pussy willow and silky dogwood cuttings in water to try to multiply them for nature.

Pushed 5 cuttings (Sambucus canadensis) into the ground at the edge of my woods yesterday. It always amazes me that that's all there is to it...a stick with a couple buds at the top end, pushed in as far as possible. I put them in an area where the yard drainage enters the woods and heads for nearby Mud Creek. So they'll take up plenty of moisture before the water leaves the property.

We went up the hill today to look at our trees that were planted two weekends ago. About half are showing signs of life, with most of the cherry trees showing at least a few buds, and only one of the elderberry bushes showing leaves (the other ones might have grown a bit or it might just be wishful thinking on my part). Also we have a ton of purple flowers blooming - not sure what they are, maybe dwarf larkspur?

One of the elderberry bushes we planted is starting to have some greenery!

(The rest just look like we shoved twigs in the ground; hoping most of them survive. Also most of our mulch washed away in yesterday's storm! One garden stake came out of the ground. Otherwise things look great.)

A tale of two Elderberries. The European Black Elderberry is just barely getting started whereas the native Red Elderberry is already developing flower buds.

As part of my ongoing research into related value chain development, I recently learned about the Midwest Cooperative.

Their to-be-updated website is a bit of a mess right now, but you can find quite a bit of useful info there about this fascinating initiative, and their federated regional hub model. Despite their name they have a national membership.

They also have a lot of helpful info about growing and marketing elder products: grow.midwest-elderberry.coop/

Thanks @Seedling!

Sean is a great nearby source of propagation information. We'll be sourcing some stock from him this year.

I'm working with Steve Gabriel at Wellspring Forest Farm & School to support and scale as a more common and sustainable livelihood in the Finger Lakes region of NY. Folks like Sean are an important and valued part of value chain development here :)

Trying to think of some more medicinal plants I can grow here.

is pretty well established. Gonna take some cuttings of that here in a week or so. Been taking about 1 Tbsp of elderberry syrup every once in a while, whenever I feel like I'm coming down with something. It's worked so far.

I think the (Bocking 14) is established now. I put some live roots in the ground this fall and I saw a sprout in one of the spots where it was planted during this warm spell.

I put some seeds under some leaf mulch, hoping for the best. Who knows. I think squirrels are gonna find them though.

Haven't had luck with yet. got too hot that one year and kinda bleached.

It's tough. This soil is so full of clay and the weather seems to get too hot too fast.

Looking to connect with folks who are actively involved in production and value add activities.

Its one of several related endeavors I'm getting involved with here in the Northeast US... I'm particularly interested in the propagation side of things.
