Trying to find old promotional materials from some of the earliest electrical components manufactures in France (Télémécanique Électrique, Merlin Gerin). There was an awesome French poster for one that sort of portrayed their single-pole switch/breaker as a sort of snake or dragon - saw it once in a promotional poster from the late 1800s early 1900s. Might have been in a history PDF from Schneider or Square D.

I am trying to figure out why as late as 1975 the #Cray 1 #supercomputer was utilizing delay-lines for the system clocks instead of using crystal oscillators. Below is the timing setting chart for the second hardware revision of the Cray 1. Maybe it was more reliable at the time considering how many different things in the system needed a reliable, synchronized clock signal?

Didn’t get nearly what I planned to done after work yesterday. Added in protective grating above sumps and access ways underneath the #transformers. Also did basic texturing for the firewalls (literal firewalls to protect equipment - transformers tend to be full of flammable oil for cooling and insulation).

I can imagine the EE's looking at this post now, twitching as they look at my twisted and contorted circuit diagram.

I wanted to show the circuit with the pins in order around the IC! Because of the way integrated circuits are all too often designed, the circuit-in-silicon is always a bit more folded in on itself than we often draw it on paper!

Where does the 555 timer get its name?

There is a resistor ladder from VCC (pin 8) to ground (pin 1) comprised of three 5 k-ohm resistors that divide VCC into thirds. It is these three resistors from whence this super useful timer IC derives its name!

It can do more than just timing, but its baked-in hysteresis points at ⅔VCC for the threshold voltage and ⅓VCC for the trigger voltage makes it useful for timing when paired with a resistor-capacitor network!

I know I haven't been posting much lately. I've just been slightly depressed about my job and stuff.

I've been working on making changes to improve things, but for now I feel like I'm in Limbo and I don't have a lot of motivation to be chatty and whimsical.

I'll be fine, though. I've been really enjoying my studies lately. Stepping through #ControlTheory exercises has given me an appreciation for #ElectricalEngineering that I never had before. 😺
