Here's your periodic reminder about how cursed Japanese wiring is.

This is an official, standard Apple power cable that shipped with a MacBook.

DIY DC Power Tips:

The only reason to fuse both sides of a DC power line is if connection polarity can be accidentally reversed. (eg. ring terminals) Otherwise, fusing just the positive line is sufficient.

Fuses don't prevent you from releasing magic smoke. They protect you from potential fires.

A fully NEC compliant pool can still shock the crap out of you. Code updates incoming in 2026. In case you plan to build a pool, consult the latest EPRI suggestions. Costs $200 extra to do it right at build time, $16k to fix it later.

@davey @brett lets be honest, that's no safer at 24V than the running of metal strips/tape up the inside edge of the shelves.
I just wish a stick-on product were made that already had 4+ conductors exposed full length like for slot cars.
Aside: with LED lighting running 24V at 4W/foot, 8 shelves, two feet wide would require about 128W which is 5.3A.

Do you have an electric heater panel?

You may want to check its connections. Cheap panels only twist the wires with some insulation (right), better crimp those (left)

MiL had an extension cord run under an exterior door. I just happened to notice. This could have resulted in a fire or the metal door being electrified and shocking someone.

don't work on live circuits or panels. Just don't. There are very limited cases where that's allowed, and if you live in one of those cases, you'd already be familiar with the code enough to know it.

Also, if a breaker trips and you don't know why, don't just go flipping it back on, especially not more than once. Arc flash from this does occur. I've seen it. The injuries from inhaling vaporized copper are not something you want.

arc fault breakers matter. If you are putting out lots of strings of lights, consider upgrading the relevant breakers. That's a lot of exposed wiring that can get damaged.

it's a good time to post some safety tips. I was a forensic engineer and fire investigator for five years, so I've seen some things.

Care for your extension cords. Don't let them get pinched. If they are damaged, throw them out immediately. Get the ones with flat heads, so you can push furniture back up against them. I saw an entire apartment building burn because someone shoved a fridge back too hard and damaged the plug.
