Hey Mastodonians! In the past two or three years, I have encountered situations where it would be *really* nice to stick a camera into an enclosed space (in my case they are: a mysterious void space in my friend’s house that we want to potentially open up and turn into storage space, and a couple of spaces between walls or in duct work).

I looked at a *bunch* of borescope cameras on Amazon, but they all seem to have a maximum focal range of about 4 inches. They also come with long cables, so I know I can get closer, but I’m more interested in sticking a camera in a hole and seeing what the space looks like - I *think* that means I want something that can focus farther away.

So, some questions if you have any experience with this kind of thing. Am I wrong about the range? Am I looking at the wrong kind of camera? Should I be looking at “spy” cameras or the like? What do professionals actually use in these cases? Or do they just use the borescopes and tolerate out-of-focus images?

I have pre #WWII wiring in my #apartment. How do I know? An electrician came over to check a non-working #outlet. (No, not building #maintenance. An actual bloody #electrician.) The guy explained to me what he did. He said there's probably a junction box #buried in a #wall. Against code, but people still do it. Based on the diagnosis work he did, I agree with him. (For the record, I've previously owned two houses and did some electrical work on them.)

It's very useful if you have trained as an #Electrician ⚡

I finished some electrician work today for our home renovation. I added a main switch, some new cable routing to the main fuses and a #Shelly Pro 3EM energy meter. But there's still a lot todo. For now I'm happy 😊

Have an interesting #electrical issue in my home. Yes, I will be bringing in a licensed electrician to check it, but it fascinates me because I can't conceive of a way that this particular fault can be possible.

Would be interested in others' informed or otherwise evidence- or theory-based hypotheses.

This is a N.A. situation; split single-phase 120V and phase-to-phase 240V.

Summary: a dedicated 120V circuit is showing significant AC voltage on the ground wire.

Residential #electrician question: I have a room in my house that has three (3) 20A circuits, one for each of three walls. The previous owners intended for it to be a workout room but we just use it as an art studio and have a laptop charger and a lamp plugged in.

Separately, I have a shed that has a single 15A circuit. I would like to put a 60A subpanel in the shed. Is it possible/legal to combine the three 20A circuits into one breaker and use the freed ampacity to feed the shed?
