Hooray for Leah C. Stokes who told to take a hike. We also cut our financial relationship with the company by buying an induction cooktop that sits on top of a non-functioning gas range and stove, a microwave that doubles as an oven, and an infrared heater. As renters, we can't partake in the rebates available, even if we could afford to. I hope more people are inspired by the actions of others who have had enough of .

Beware people talking clean hydrogen, they are the ones who brought you clean coal
reneweconomy.com.au/beware-peo

"Clean Coal" is a furphy, and it's looking like "Clean Hydrogen" is unattainable. In reality, practically all hydrogen made today is extracted from fossil fuels, or is made from water by electrolysis that's powered by a non-renewable source of electricity.

Some people talk about "Blue hydrogen" and claim they're cracked the secret of making it in commercial volumes at a price that's competitive with renewables, but they're not being honest with you about the cost or the quality of their product. Proponents claim that coal โ€” such as Victoria's incredibly dirty, low-quality, high-pollutant brown coal โ€” can be transformed into "Brown Hydrogen" or "Black Hydrogen" by capturing the carbon liberated during the hydrogen extraction process using Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Same goes for "Blue Hydrogen" that's extracted from fossil gas.
They're sorta correct, in the sense that you can get out hydrogen. But if you blink you'll miss seeing where the Carbon goes. By then, they'll attempt to scratch off the label to rebrand their dirty hydrogen as "Green Hydrogen".

Herein lies the scam: they're saying is can be done cleanly. The problem is that they're using CSS as part of the process. It would be nice if CCS worked at an industrial scale at any price, but it doesn't. Countless millions of dollars have been poured by governments around the world into CCS pilot-plants at fossil fuel companies. The fossil fuel companies have all pocketed the money and failed to produce results.

Scratch the surface of any hydrogen-bro, and you'll find a hydrocarbon-bro who's deliberately propping-up the unsustainable coal/gas/petrol industry or is an unwitting fool who's science-illiterate.

Gas Networks to Blow $19M on Five-year Greenwashing Campaign in Bid to Fight Electrification and Advertise Fossil Fuel

reneweconomy.com.au/gas-networ

Victoriaโ€™s gas distribution networks continue to hype "green gas". They're claiming that they will blend hydrogen into the fossil gas supply, but cannot say how this will make fossil gas clean, or give a timeline, or reveal how much it will cost consumers to renovate their homes to install pipes and cooking/heating appliances that are capable of handling hydrogen.

Hint: it takes only a Chemistry-101 level of understanding to see this is technically extremely difficult to practically impossible, in addition to being economically unfeasible, and too slow to meet decarbonisation targets to tackle climate change.

In other words, this is more lies from the increasingly desperate fossil fuel industry in a bid to prolong their planet-destroying business model. The government should step in to tell the fossil fuel companies to STFU, take their decades of profits and die quietly.

Solar Citizens lobby group say they've driven 10,000 kms in an electric ute (that's an pick-up truck for you non-Australians) and that they're perfectly suited to regional .

This should be good news, but having recently done a 8,500km trip to far north Queensland, I'll certainly agree with them that "the country needs policy changes and more public chargers to encourage the transport trend."

Women who drive are in the minority, which makes me and my friend Amy pioneers on the green frontier. Check out our experience traveling along the California coast in a rented -- proof that battery range and charging infrastructure have come a long way.

The time of the year when the chiles start rolling in. We're just eating the very leading wave of the harvest.

I guess once we replace our gas range, I'll have to roast them under the broiler. Which doesn't get quite as good results and makes it harder to do one at a time, but will be the right thing to do.

Our current learning rates have EV batteries at $60 / kWh in 2030. What does this mean?

An Ioniq5 battery is 77.4 kWh, has a 300 mile range, and costs about $10,000. In 2030, when EV battery prices have fallen to $60/kWh, the battery in an EV with a *600* mile range will cost $9,000.

That battery will be 11x as big as a Tesla Powerwall today. You could drive hundreds of miles and then power your house for several days before it ran out.

>however if the economy doesnโ€™t change to and

We're in the midst of a polycris, that will just destroy us of we don't beech lose that. We need a massive energy reduction and degrowth. Eg bicycles instead of ecars, no flying etc

>โ€œClean energy might help deal with emissions, but it does nothing to reverse deforestation, overfishing, soil depletion and mass extinction. A growth-obsessed economy powered by clean energy will still tip us into ecological disaster.โ€ - Jason Hickel

@jasonhickel

Look at Indonesia building GWs of new coal fired power plants to mine, refine and manufacture for ecars

I can't understand why an induction-based water kettle that turns itself off when it boils does not appear to exist. Is there something about that makes this impossible?

I recently bought an electric chainsaw. Iโ€™m really liking how easy it is to use and maintain. One thing I hadnโ€™t thought of is that it still needs some fossil fuels (for now) in the form of chain oil, but itโ€™s much quieter, easy to start, and has no stinky fumes.

To the sector, we need to go from 66 million fossil fuel to zero over the next three decades.ย
In order to achieve this goal, we need to phase out 2.4 million every single year for the next 27 years. This is where the math gets a little scary.

What's the deal with natural gas stoves?

99% Invisible has a new episode with @RebLeber that explains the movement to phase them out and the emotional attachment many have.

I was surprised to learn that gas stoves are more popular in blue states than red:
California 70% of households
New Jersey 69%
Illinois 67%
New York 62%

vs

Texas 37%
Florida 8%

Action at the state level will be key.

>we have and that means is still key including getting off gas.

This was a fine plan 2 decades ago but we've run out of time for anything but massive and drastic emissions reductions which mean massive and drastic energy reductions eg no flying, no cars, insulation not AC, no more urban sprawl (trees and shurbs bicycles, electric busses and trains and no cars needing vast infrastructure adding some 6C to the urban heat island effect), higher housing density, way less meat etc while we keep using the sliver of CO2 budget building out renewables and undertaking managed abandonment and allowing developing countries to get ahead.

We've fucked around for so long, drastic and massive emsisions reductions in the order if 10% per annum for a decade are needed (way more then the 7% or so during Covid) to have any chance of a biosphere that resembles todays.

Failure to do so will see us closer to 2c and we'll collapse civilisation from crossing the tipping points where zero anthro emsisions won't matter anymore, as the biosphere will have taken over and keep heating regardless..

A good talk by Professor Kevin Anderson on that here

'French City Drops Order for 51 Hydrogen Buses After Realising Electric Ones Six Times Cheaper'

Green hydrogen will be useful for making steel, and possibly for fueling aircraft, but otherwise, why would you do it? We have the opportunity to be free of a material need, but various billionaires want us to keep buying a 'stuff' that can be doled out at a rate that suits the supplier (artificial scarcity - see OPEC and Putin and our mysterious inflation problem). Electrify everything!

Fuel prices are coming back down and suddenly the inflation monster is tamed. It ain't rocket science. It barely even qualifies as economics. Come on politicians - see what's right in front of you. Our fossil fuel dependence is killing us in more ways than one.
