Synths can also look very similar and be completely different. The four synths all work on drastically different principles*—we have subtractive, additive, and FM synthesis, and also sampling. They have as different as a tuba and a violin.

But that’s one of the coolest things about synths and other : their form factor is arbitrary relative to the sounds they make.
