I had a great day yesterday at the first @uk_ie_dh annual meeting at the University of London Senate House. We heard some great introductory talks about the new organisation and it's practices, and saw the fruits of a thorough series of consultations and scoping exercises as part of events during lockdown.

We also heard a great set of lightning talks about #ElectronicLiterature and Complex Digital Literature and it's exhibition/sustainability as well as best practice for #LinkedOpenData and using #AI to identify objects in the UK portable antiquities scheme.

Finally a great keynote from Agiatis Bernardou of DARIAH-EU entitled 'Interweaving Legacies: DHRIs, Difficult Heritage, and the Powers of Collaboration, Inclusivity and Openness'.

I wrote this as lecture notes for a university conference in 2020. Since no proceedings of that conference were published, I finally uploaded it to my homepage.

It pretty much summarizes my 2006 dissertation and why I got bored with 'new media', though I could not always escape its discourse. In retrospect, its last paragraph also seems to contain some accurate predictions for ChatGPT, Dall-E & Co.

I have been trying to find time to fill some gaps in the documentation of my work that relies on the Twitter API to function. These were mostly done in collaboration with Chris Rodley and were usually installed in galleries and public sights.

B.E.T.T.Y. (2014) is one such work.

It asks, "What happens when a chatbot draws their words from social media?"

I have revisited many times, and as the tone of Twitter, and it's user-base has changed over the years, so too has B.E.T.T.Y.'s tone. If the API goes dark tomorrow, then today is probably the last time I will get to interact with her

Since it seems like a very trendy thing, I asked chatGPT for some ideas. I didn't like his boring and trivial suggestions at all. So I quickly cooked up a text generator, trained with ChatGPT responses, but adding some healthy randomness and creativity :-)
