Here is a new composite image of El Gordo combining X-ray data from the Chandra Observatory (from 2011 and 2012) and the new JWST image of El Gordo.

The image shows the diffuse, superheated gas in the cluster observed in X-rays from Chandra (blue) along with the galaxies in the cluster and behind it from the JWST data.

We can see numerous additional galaxies in the JWST image.
The thin line gravitationally lensed image of La Flaca, the Thin One, is visible in the Hubble image too, but not the image of El Anzuelo, the Fishhook.

The inset named B contains a bright arc of a galaxy behind El Gordo. It is nicknamed “El Anzuelo” (The Fishhook).
Light from this galaxy took 10.6 billion years to reach Earth.
The galaxy is disk-shaped, only 26,000 light-years in diameter – about 25% the size of the Milky Way. Star formation is already rapidly declining in the galaxy’s center, in a process known as quenching.

El Gordo is a galaxy cluster. A galaxy cluster contains many galaxies, massive and close enough to attract each other. El Gordo contains 2.1 quadrillion solar masses, ~90% of which is dark matter.

It's takes ~9.7 billion light-years
for its light to reach us (the distance is larger due to inflation).
The image shows many galaxies within El Gordo.
The streaks and smudges are images of galaxies far behind, whose light is bent by galaxies in El Gordo.
