A #model of #Gale #crater, with the #landing zone of the #Mars Science Laboratory #rover, #Curiosity, which was present as a visual aide in the #NASA #Press Center. The #LandingZone is the white #ellipse.
The central peak of the crater, known as both Mount Sharp and #Aeolis #Mons, is believed to hold many clues to the past of Mars.
The crater also holds features that may be evidence of being formed by flowing, liquid water.
Curiosity landed on August 6, 2012.

fun fact! if you make a series of concentric ellipses that rotate at a constant rate about the midpoint of the foci, you can easily fake a spiral galaxy type structure that runs in linear time (a typical n-body solver runs in O(n^2) or at best O(n log n) time)

don't ask me how to translate that into code, i'm not sure how i did it myself. you are not limited to 2 armed galaxies tho, and with the right settings can create arbitrarily complex fakes. this does not simulate gravitational forces, and is just a cheapo cheat on keplerian laws of orbits.
