On & - beyond , simply allowing a corporate platform to gain enough of an audience on the fediverse to throw its weight around is a terrible idea in and of itself; it would have an outsized influence on not only technical matters, but culture, moderation workload, et cetera. We can't let anything with a profit motive near the fediverse with a bargepole.

Many people included me happily used because it used XMPP. I wouldn't have used it if I knew they planned to defederate. I like to think that avoiding federating to could make people conscious. Alternatively we could inform Facebook users but I fear it's an easily lost battle 😥

Apparently will use the protocol, making it compatible with the and [1].

This sounds like a good thing, or even a "win" for fedi systems. But I'm a cynical bugger and Microsoft's old "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" slogan is ringing in my ears [2].

Could and be planning to
activitypub or fedi? Time will tell, but we should be on our guard nonetheless.

J'adore la conclusion:

@marcoshuerta What's more likely to happen, though, is that Threads will make onboarding / UX for the masses, so everyone will join there instead because they "can still access everything from the Fediverse" and then once the critical mass is on their Platform Meta will turn it into a walled garden to lock everyone in and milk them for their attention.

Then you lost access not only to the few people you're missing now, but also everyone else.

Tada! Classic playbook.

So today I read this one blogpost from like, a fediverse instance admin (won't name names, mostly because I don't *remember* them) about how they wouldn't be joining and wouldn't be defederating from and

Now, they're free to do that. But what I want to ramble about briefly is that their main argument for this was "This will not protect our privacy, Meta can scrape our data anyway". Which at face value seems like a good point.

But the thing is. I'm fairly sure that if what Meta wanted was just "data", they could be doing this quietly, right now, without making a whole lot of hay about launching their own instance and federating and doing the whole dance.

isn't what this is about -- Sorry to say, but what you willingly post on a public forum, or microblogging site in this case, is by definition not private. (though it IS nice that Fedi doesn't quietly add MORE data to what you willingly share on the sly)

@KydiaMusic There's plenty of scraping going on. The nature of federation makes scraping impossible to stop.

BUT…bad actors have very little influence over us here. They can watch us all they want, but they can't control us with their advertisements and algorithms.

Which is why / is planning to destroy the via . This must not be allowed to succeed.
