@racchio #EmbraceExtendExtinguish, formati proprietari ed altri giochetti fatti apposta per ammazzare la concorrenza, queste le mie critiche principali.
@lupantano
@sindarina WTF?
#Google literally - like all #GAFAMs - does an #EmbraceExtendExtinguish on #eMail, like #Microsoft does with #MAPI on #Exchange / #MicrosoftExchange & #Azure #hostedexchange

On #threads & #fedipact - beyond #embraceExtendExtinguish , simply allowing a corporate platform to gain enough of an audience on the fediverse to throw its weight around is a terrible idea in and of itself; it would have an outsized influence on not only technical matters, but culture, moderation workload, et cetera. We can't let anything with a profit motive near the fediverse with a bargepole.

@techprophet The entire purpose of this system is to “abuse” it. It's stage 3 in the #EmbraceExtendExtinguish plan for alternative browsers like #Firefox and #Vivaldi, and alternative operating systems like #Linux and #BSD.

You're right. I should have written "made irrelevant" or "tamed and turned into a niche". I somehow misused the #embraceextendextinguish mada infamous by #microsoft
Many people included me happily used #googletalk because it used XMPP. I wouldn't have used it if I knew they planned to defederate. I like to think that avoiding federating to #meta could make people conscious. Alternatively we could inform Facebook users but I fear it's an easily lost battle 😥

#Meta most probably just want to #embraceextendextinguish the #Fediverse just as #Google did with #XMPP.
In doubt I fear it is wiser to avoid federating with anything owned by Meta

Anyone wanting to #embraceextendextinguish open, shared standards shall be addressed in the only way feasible: avoiding any relation with them. Especially when they are too big. We learned this lesson the hard way with #google and #xmpp

#meta using #ActivityPub for #Threads is a blatant and manifest #embraceextendextinguish scheme!

#Fedipact and the risk of #Meta's #EmbraceExtendExtinguish strategy have made it on to the BBC news:

Apparently #threads will use the #activitypub protocol, making it compatible with the #fediverse and #mastodon [1].
This sounds like a good thing, or even a "win" for fedi systems. But I'm a cynical bugger and Microsoft's old "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" slogan is ringing in my ears [2].
Could #meta and #zuckerberg be planning to
#embraceextendextinguish activitypub or fedi? Time will tell, but we should be on our guard nonetheless.

#EmbraceExtendExtinguish is the story told from the point of view of the victims, of the #foss users and devs. It doesn't mean that these big corporation always have the goal of destroying us.

A little thought about #threads, the larger #fediverse and the threat of #EmbraceExtendExtinguish:

Merci pour le partage.
J'adore la conclusion:
"le but n’est pas de gagner. [...] Le but est de rester un outil. Un outil destiné à offrir un espace de liberté aux êtres humains connectés. Quelque chose qu’aucune entité commerciale ne pourra jamais offrir."

@marcoshuerta What's more likely to happen, though, is that Threads will make onboarding / UX for the masses, so everyone will join there instead because they "can still access everything from the Fediverse" and then once the critical mass is on their Platform Meta will turn it into a walled garden to lock everyone in and milk them for their attention.
Then you lost access not only to the few people you're missing now, but also everyone else.
Tada! Classic #EmbraceExtendExtinguish playbook.

So today I read this one blogpost from like, a fediverse instance admin (won't name names, mostly because I don't *remember* them) about how they wouldn't be joining #fediPact and wouldn't be defederating from #meta and #threads
Now, they're free to do that. But what I want to ramble about briefly is that their main argument for this was "This will not protect our privacy, Meta can scrape our data anyway". Which at face value seems like a good point.
But the thing is. I'm fairly sure that if what Meta wanted was just "data", they could be doing this quietly, right now, without making a whole lot of hay about launching their own instance and federating and doing the whole #embraceExtendExtinguish dance.
#privacy isn't what this is about -- Sorry to say, but what you willingly post on a public forum, or microblogging site in this case, is by definition not private. (though it IS nice that Fedi doesn't quietly add MORE data to what you willingly share on the sly)
#fedipact #meta #threads #embraceextendextinguish #privacy
@darth_akeda @ablackcatstail @nshady @BlackAzizAnansi So typical to choose convenience over hard facts and become an apologist for the monetised juggernaut. #Meta = #EmbraceExtendExtinguish MO.
#meta #embraceextendextinguish
@KydiaMusic There's plenty of scraping going on. The nature of federation makes scraping impossible to stop.
BUT…bad actors have very little influence over us here. They can watch us all they want, but they can't control us with their advertisements and algorithms.
Which is why #Facebook / #Meta is planning to destroy the #Fediverse via #EmbraceExtendExtinguish. This must not be allowed to succeed.
#facebook #meta #fediverse #embraceextendextinguish
Solid thread. Well thought out. Worth reading and explains concerns about federating with FB and why they're still up to no good.

So, someone at #Meta, named Rachel, contacted @kev about having a hush talk. And now there's a screenshot of the message. What can we learn/infer from it?

@compuguy Yes, you're being naïve. #Meta intends to #EmbraceExtendExtinguish the #Fediverse. They can and will destroy our community if we let them in.
