AAAS: "Three organs in one? Researchers unscramble mysterious roles of human yolk sac." You may not be a chicken or duck-billed platypus, nonetheless you had a yolk sac during embryonic development. Researchers obtained yolk sac tissue from a biobank in UK, derived from embryos of 4 to 8 wks, + profiled gene activity at various stages. Four wks after conception, the yolk sac creates the first blood-forming stem cells + macrophages. "As development progresses, the yolk sac hands over this job to the forming liver, which then passes it to the bone marrow, the birthplace of blood cells in adults." But the yolk sac is multifunctional, in that it also 'also carries proteins for breaking down harmful toxins and produces proteins necessary for blood clotting—a key ability in the early embryo.' Several enzymes have a role in lipid + sugar metabolism, which implies that despite lacking yolk the sac still provides nourishment. "Adults’ kidneys churn out erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates formation of new red blood cells, and the yolk sac appears to be the early embryo’s source for the substance.' It is no joking matter to say the yolk sac performs jobs that will later be delegated to the liver, kidneys + bone marrow. No joking matter, hope you got that.

Oh boy, this is some Black mirror kind of stuff. Synthetic human embryos. Amazing and frightening. No sperm or ova required.

Imaging microscopy is one of the methods by which we see things on the cellular and molecular level, discovering processes that might elude our detection with other techniques.

Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory have taken Brillouin microscopy, a non-invasive but low power and inefficient method and amped it up to speedy high resolution capabilities for the study of embryos.

This article on the dynamics of including is fascinating. We know a lot more than when I studied as a sophomore. "many cells—perhaps almost half, including
other nerve cells and gut cells—
seemed to hang around but switched
their repertoire of active genes, taking on
different roles in the adult. “What a cell
is capable of, is more flexible than
we previously appreciated,” “It seems that there are different
cell types at different developmental
stages,”

Since I am on I suppose I should post about medical stuff from time to time. So I present to you THE MESONEPHROS. These structures are the first definitive functional unit or nephron in the renal system however they do not form any part of the mature kidney or nephrons as they degenerate. In males the mesonephros gives rise to vas deferens among other stuff. This section is from a case of spontaneous abortion.
