Is there a better place to read the #emdiplomacy handbook proofs than on my balcony?

Currently, reading proofs of the #emdiplomacy handbook. And I'm regularly puzzled by English hyphenation. (This doesn't mean German rules are logical. 😉)

As diplomats regularly had to negotiate peace, treaties are an important source for #emdiplomacy as well. The Leibniz Institute of European History has published nearly 2.000 #earlymodern #peacetreaties.

We talk a lot of #emdiplomacysSecrets, but to discover them, we need to get to the sources. That’s where all the secrets are hidden.
Thus, today we want to talk about #emdiplomacysSources & especially the sources you can access online.
First of all, what sources do we use for discovering #emdiplomacy? Most important are of course diplomatic letters written by the diplomats to their home base & thereby reporting on their activities. /1

Said explained that it was due to the healthy climate that the Swedes were all very well built, strong, fair and became quite old. Such accounts fit in with general observations by contemporary philosophers, such as Voltaire, who saw a connection between the respective climate and the character of the society and the political system.
If you want to learn more about Said’s travel we recommend Joachim Östlund’s excellent study.

Last time, we talked about #emdiplomats constantly complaining about the weather. Besides this we find descriptions of the general climate and how it shaped the respective societies in #emdiplomacysSources.
Especially interesting is the account of Mehmed Said Efendi, envoy of Sultan Mahmud I, who travelled to Sweden in 1733. It’s the first Ottoman account on Sweden.

… the weather! Summer is here! And with it lots of things we can discuss and complain about, like too much or not enough rain, too hot, too cold. #emdiplomats did that, too!
Reading #earlymodern diplomatic correspondences you notice that the diplomats complained about a lot of things: lack of money, ailings and of course about the weather.

Under the new #WissZeitVG, we would not have been able to do a project such as the #emdiplomacy handbook. We would have to focus exclusively on our 2nd book. This book would be superficial, as we would not have the time to conduct our research properly. We would not have found any authors (at least not from Germany/ Austria), as they would have to prioritise on important papers for the habil, while the profs would be busy finding new Postdocs & administrating the collapsing system.
