Especially interesting is the account of Mehmed Said Efendi, envoy of Sultan Mahmud I, who travelled to Sweden in 1733. It’s the first Ottoman account on Sweden.

… the weather! Summer is here! And with it lots of things we can discuss and complain about, like too much or not enough rain, too hot, too cold. did that, too! 
Reading diplomatic correspondences you notice that the diplomats complained about a lot of things: lack of money, ailings and of course about the weather.

Moreover, it seems that there were quite a lot of that drank too much. This could lead to delays in the negotiations because of hangovers. Other diplomats tried to use this to their advantage to extract information from the drunken diplomat. (2/3)

Today's reading recommendation is a classic from the 1980s: Franz Bosbach's The costs of the (in German). It doesn't necessary look like it, but its really fascinating. Although he called it a structural history, it has so much about the ' daily life and is a real treasure trove for questions of cultural history. usually were not only diplomats. Their careers were manifold. As todays' James Stanhope shows, they were ministers, soldiers, parlamentarians. Acting as a diplomat was often just one aspect of their careers. How these different elements and experiences influenced each other needs more research.

Writing and reporting were central tasks of and often very formalised. Letter writing guides such as the one described here (fedihum.org/@dehypotheses/1098) were important tools to educate .

Yes, of course! Information gathering was one of the main tasks of . The bounderies between what was considered being "legal" acquisition of information, intelligence or espionage are thin lines. A lot depended on the respective perspective. are often referred to as "honourable" spies.

So, naturally, there will also be an article on , information gathering and espionage in the handbook.
