On the eve of July 4th here in the US, I encourage everyone in #emergencymedicine and #emergencymedicalservices #EMS to read about Elijah McClain, and watch the body camera footage from the case.
Freedom is not the same for all Americans. For this young man, his freedom permanently ended that night after an inexcusably tragic and avoidable series of events.

Hey y’all learners in #emergencymedicine and #emergencymedicalservices ! Something I’ve realized watching new medics recently is how hard taking a history can be. Quick tip: a good focused medical history isn’t about protocol questions. It’s about patterns. For example — if someone suffers a fall, think about what injuries they might have. If head injury is possible, how far was the fall, did they have LOC, are they on thinners. Get the “how bad can it be” data for that diagnosis.

For all y’all in #EmergencyMedicine and #EmergencyMedicalServices , take a second today to figure out where in your practice unconscious bias is affecting your patients.
For example: I try to take a second after initially evaluating incarcerated folks to make sure I’m running an appropriate differential. They’re high risk for many things, and often have complaints written off.

NEW ARTICLE: "Devin Brosnahan of Augusta, Georgia: Neo-Nazi, 'White Lives Matter' Organizer, and Emergency Medical Technician"
Last year, we appealed for information on a neo-Nazi who uses the alias "Levi Savage.” "Levi" leads the Georgia chapter of White Lives Matter and works as an emergency medical technician.
We have now identified “Levi” as Devin Brosnahan of Augusta, Georgia. Online records show that in 2022, Brosnahan worked for South Aiken Emergency Medical Services across the state line in South Carolina.

How do #emergencymedicalservices providers decide if you can refuse an ambulance trip when they respond to a call about you? In the US, the key issue here is capacity to make a medical decision. A patient has capacity generally if they are an independent adult who is sober, can understand the risk of their condition, and can understand the risk of forgoing a test/treatment. If you don’t meet those criteria, EMS providers typically can compel you to be transported. This is rare.

This patient called EMS for palpitations. EMS obtained an ECG, provided a treatment, and by arrival to the ER, the patient feels better. Here’s the ECG during treatment. What’s the diagnosis and the likely treatment?
