“In #Dostoevsky the characters and situations always stand for more than themselves; infinity attends them; though yet they remain individuals they expand to embrace it and summon it to embrace them; one can apply to them the saying of St. Catherine of Siena that God is in the soul and the soul is in God as the sea is in the fish and the fish is in the sea.”

This is interesting: "The Celestial Omnibus" short story by E.M. Forster (1912).
https://monadnock.net/forster/omnibus.html
It really reminds me, in theme, tone, and treatment, of stories by Neil Gaiman, which is not something I expected from Forster (but of course, I'm absolutely no expert on Forster, though I've read several of his books).
Anyway, I enjoyed it, and it is interesting to wonder: if Gaiman were writing 100+ years ago, what would it look / sound like?

Searching a bit I see it's been adapted as a play at least once. (https://www.theatre22.org/)

“Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon. Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer.”

How odd #learning strategies can be. My #mind works not laterally in the sense of thinking of a particular problem ‘outside the box’ as they say. Rather I engage in a myriad of #contexts (#economic, #literary, #history, #science, #cogsci, #aesthetics, #philosophy) simultaneously, exploring meticulously for links. This should ill-suit me to philosophy. Well, no one ever ever said ‘Only solve’.

“You care for me a little bit, I do think, but I can't hang all my life on a little bit.” ~ E.M. Forster, Maurice
I know not everyone out there is currently obsessed with the writings of #EMForster, as I am, but I just discovered this online treasure trove of scholarly articles about him, so here you go. From the Polish Journal of #EnglishStudies:
"There was nothing to distract him this time; his sentimentality had died, so had his anxiety for the family honour."

I think I have a new literary crush: Adam Berwick, the kind, introspective bachelor farmer in “The #JaneAusten Society,” the charming and, at times, deeply moving novel by Natalie Jenner.
Adam joins my other fictional crushes: #AlecScudder from #Maurice by #EMForster (he was played by Rupert Graves in the #MerchantIvory film version), Roderick Brooke from the Sybil Ingram novels by Amanda DeWees, and Simon Kincaide from the Badlands series of novels by Morgan Brice (Gail Martin).

@nidgethompson #EMForster, who I’ve never read, apparently said ‘Only connect’. Books connect exponentially. That, in turn, became a rallying cry for #cognitive #architectural #engineers (eg. D. #Rumelhart, P. #Smolensky, &c) wanting to exploit more the neuroanatomy or #hardware?) of the #biological 🧠 rather than the idea (eg #Fodor) that discrete parts of the brain run #software and the further idea that thinking is essentially the latter (a long standing research programme).

Höre mir gerade mit wachsender Begeisterung die Hörspielfassung von E.M. Forsters geradezu prophetischer SciFi-Story "Die Maschine steht still" an. 👌
