When #NASA was formed, land on the small community around Cape Canaveral on Merritt Island, was seized by the #US federal government via #EminentDomain and given to the new agency for its #Moonshot.
After landowners were paid and left, structures were mostly demolished, though traces remain, like this remnant of a #citrus #orchard.
NASA didn’t end up using this land, so it became the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Ideally, one would get all the shore communities together in the same room and hash out an agreement that nobody is happy with but everyone can live with. Maybe they tried that.
But the cables have to come ashore *somewhere*, and the speed of the #EnergyTransition matters, a lot.
Think about it: if we were talking about oil or gas pipelines they would just use #EminentDomain. rules to get it in place.

#ProtectingTheEnvironment and #salmonFisheries/#SalmonSpawningAreas is very important,and clearly a lot of work and some money would be required to either #RestoreTheTrail they used to use or #ClearANewTrail, but these folks need to be able to #accessProperty they own and used to be able to use. The #FederalBureaucracy effectively using #EminentDomain doesn't seem fair in these cases.
